Anden, looking forward to your visit to Sthlm. I'd be happy to buy you a beer or two - honestly. Plz PM me if you have such plans. I've seen plenty of your stunnign images - and I am simply trying to understand the balance/ratio between lens and great photography skills. I may lack both, but not the interest in finding out :-)

Joop. Sry, I now realize that my wordings was less than elegant. Sincerely hope you dont took much offence, glad to see the smiley.

I just wanted to thank you all in this thread - you inspired me to buy this lens, and although I just been able to take a few snap-shots yesterday, I already love this lens. It has a lot of character, and I think I will use it a lot for snapshots! Hera are a few test shots I took yesterday:

Now keep on posting more images!

I realize that nobody can specifically answer this question but I am hoping that if I give specifics perhaps I might get some useful advice.

It is an oldish question....Zeiss 35mm f1.4 or f2. But, again, I am hoping with some specifics of how I shoot I might be gently pushed in one direction or the other by those who have had experience with both.

I mainly do landscape and nature....f8 and above and mostly on a tripod. But, I also enjoy making 'painterly' and even abstract images so an optimum lens for me would be able to do both well. I have read that the 1.4 is almost like having two lenses in one with a more painterly effect and less contrast in the details up to f2.8 and that at smaller apertures it acts like a sharp detailed and high contrast lens like the 35f2. If this were the case then, in some ways, the weight doesn't really bother me as it is as if you are carrying two lenses in one.

So my main questions are:

Is it like two lenses in one?
Is the 1.4 as sharp as the f2 at f5.6 and above?
Is it really much harder than the f2 to focus? If using a tripod and live view using DOF preview to bring it to f2 does that make it easier?
If you could afford the f1.4 is there any reason to choose the f2 version given the type of shooting I do.

Thanks.

Howard

Howard, be careful. You are here on the thread about "former" Zeiss 35mm f1.4, like the Contax and the Rollei, not the "current" ZE/ZF.
If your query pertains to the "current" one, here is my POV, having owned a 35 f:2.0 for a year, and now a f:1.4
The ZE 35 f:1.4 is definitely as sharp as the f:2.0 at all apertures. However, as it has more detail, it can look slightly less sharp, because its shots are more subtle.
The 35 f:1.4 is the easiest ZE lens to focus of all I have owned, and I have owned/shot all of them except the 18mm. Of course, the 21 is a special case because it has so much DOF that you can pretty much go without focusing it at all. In this regard, I respectfully disagree with the learned Lloyd Chambers. That is true for me even at f:1.4, where the 35 is very much easier to focus than either the 50mm or the 85mm. I have posted on the Z* thread a 100% crop of a wide open shot handheld at 1/11 sec which was sharp enough for my taste, so I am not complaning...:-)
Yes, there are reasons one might prefer the f:2.0. Don't forget the weight. The new 35 is seriously heavy and bulky. Maybe a problem for some of us, whereas the f:2.0 balances very nicely on a 5DII.
Another yes is the field curvature. This lens is not good for shooting brick walls, plain and simple, because of it; I know at least one brilliant shooter here who tested one and refused to buy it because "he could never get sharp corners", meaning he had butted his head against this problem.
Also, some people can prefer the slightly less detailed rendering of the f:2.0, which makes everything "stand out" not unlike a MP lens, and gives wonderful 3D. The f:1.4's 3D is more subtle, as it extends to OOF and background areas.
No, the 35mm f:1.4 is not two lenses in one. For me, it is very detailed from wide open onwards, and just gets slightly contrastier, thus looking sharper, and free of vignetting after f2.0. It is actually my "best" Zeiss lens now, ahead of even the mighty 21, and I consider its versatility one of ite greatest pluses.
BTW, stunning shots on your site. Jaw-dropping stuff!

Philippe....thanks you for taking the time to respond in such a detailed way....IO appreciate it. You are correct, I was referring to the new ZE and didn't realize this thread was mainly referring to the old one. Maybe I will post on the 1.4 vs 2 thread as well. Now you have me really thinking I might go for the f1.4 even though I had been leaning towards the f2.0, particularly since you feel there is not a big focusing issue. LC really stressed that in his review.

Thanks, also, for the kind words about my site.

Magiclight....breakfast in bed never hurts anything. Well, if you don't get the lens you might get something else :>

Oh and by the way, I was just wondering how you think the two Zeiss lenses compare stopped down to f11 and f16 to a Canon 24-70 f2.8L at similar apertures....I know the Zeiss will far outperform at wider apertures.

Thanks

Howard

Howard, you might contact other members, such as AjayC, who already own this lens and have shot it, including wide open, to see if their experience of focusing it resembles mine of Lloyd's.

Howard,
When the new Zeiss 35/1.4 came out this spring, alot of people here were asking the same questions about which 35 to get. I have a lot of zeiss glass including the 35/2 (my first zeiss lens) and the old C/Y 35/1.4. I also got together with fellow FM'er AjayC who has the new ZE 35/1.4 and he was very gracious to let me shoot with it for a few shots. That day we took some comparison shots (handheld and informal) and posted them in this thread:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1001754/0?keyword=ze,35#9512660

I recommend looking at these two threads which have a lot of info about how these zeiss 35 lenses compare to each other:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/987333/0?keyword=ze,35#9369076

and:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1007354/0?keyword=ze,35#9568380

I would also recommend reading the zeiss technical paper about bokeh which has great information on under corrected SA (spherical aberration) lens designs like the new ZE 35/1.4.
Which zeiss 35 to get is a very personal decision that only you can make since they all have unique plusses and their minuses. The new 35/1.4 has excellent, slightly more saturated color with very low to none CA which is a plus for landscape but then it also has field curvature which LC has documented well in his review.
IMHO as you can see in LC's review that the new 35/1.4's sharpness for stopped-down landscape type shooting is not significantly better. It doesn't blow the doors off the 35/2 IMHO.
To me the new 35/1.4 is like two lenses as > f2.8 it behaves like a normal lens but under f2.8 it has this undercorrected SA design rendering which provides very smooth bokeh with very slow focus transition as each color (rgb) does not focus in the same exact plane. I asked Ajay to do an experiment where he shot various color crayons in the same shot and you can see if you focused on one color the other colors were not focused as sharply even though they were all the same distance from the camera. Although I didn't find the new 35/1.4 as hard to focus as LC mentions in his review, I would say that there is a little extra focus issues than a normally corrected lens when shooting colors like gray like LC shows and maybe red which I seem to remember Ajay saying was the hardest color to focus on of the three main rgb colors.
The undercorrected SA design of the new 35/1.4 IMHO made for narrow DOF portraiture and is similar to Softar filter look which introduces SA to give that softer, dreamier, smooth bokeh transition look. The old 35/1.4 will give a sharp, without the slight veiling haze, portrait shot with very narrow DOF anf then very fast rolloff on focus which can look unflattering as we have seen with Braniac's old shot of the old chap at the wedding which was the poster shot for 3-d here for awhile.
Price and weight are the other obvious differences which you will have to decide on.
For me, I have decided to holf off on getting the new 35/1.4 and prefer to carry my lighter 35/2 along with ZE 21, ZE 50MP, and C/Y 100/2 P as my main landscape kit.
Depending on what type of shots I plan on shooting that day, I may bring one other lens like C/Y 35/1.4 or Leca 180/2.8 APO but that is about the limit I can hike with along with my heavy 1ds3. Good luck with your decision, and please post some of your shots here in the forum with whichever Zeiss 35 lens you decide to get.
