Thanks Paul & ewadler. That would have been pretty much impossible with any other lens - at least of the ones that I've used. On occasion I can get a better medium format camera look from a single 35/1.4 shot than from a panorama shot with the 100/2.
+1
That is due to the difference in drawing style, especially the bokeh rendering difference between the two lenses.
And I don't see the same 3-d pop in the new 35/1.4 as it renders more like the 35/2 and both MP's as far as bokeh and separation.
Lloyd Chambers has some samples in the Zeiss guide now. From those I would say it has a bokeh/DOF fallof similar to the old 35/1.4 while the colors are more like the rest of the ZE line and in that respect similar to the 35/2.

I just saw that ...
What would be the price for new ZE 35/1.4?
I used to have both Contax and Rollei 35/1.4 and I preferred Rollei wide open and Contax stopped down. Sold Contax, now I want it back... But I am sure once Rollei is gone my feelings will reverse
Yes, I saw noticeable improvement with Rollei, especially at 100%. Actually, you can see it yourself. Rollei on the left, Contax on the right, 100% magnification: http://s54.radikal.ru/i143/1009/b9/793711ba0856.jpg
Given sample variation that applies to all lenses (or optomechanical items, for that matter) to some extent, I'd be hesitant to make a blanket statment about one version being better/different than the other based on a sample size of "one". That's how rumors start.

Interesting. How come you miss the Contax if the Rollei was an improvement?

I'm going to be accused of again posting gloomy cloudy pictures but I really love the way the 35/1.4 renders the colors of clouds:
lol what you talking about .. there looks to be some blue n the clouds hehe. great shots! i love the distance sunlight peeking through behind the clouds

I just looked at his latest samples in the Zeiss guide for the prototype ZE 35/1.4 and its bokeh still looks different than the CZ/Rollei 35/1.4, not seeing the painterly bokeh, and the 3-d look is less. Hard to say for sure since a lot of these shots were taken in lousy dark/dusk conditions and are mostly close up type shots.
He does mention painterly bokeh in the end while discussing the portrait shots but I don't see it in his shots with the crappy dark background. Still a nice lens and am waiting for someone to take some pictures with it which do it justice.
