Here is another interesting test. This is indoors, low light. There is an amazing color shift in the out of focus areas--all of the text in this photo is actually black (except for the two words towards the back of the crop that are actually blue). This is at f/1.4. The lens is obviously sharp, but the color shift in the bokeh is crazy.

Looking at this makes me thing that this lens needs to be returned.
I think you are correct.I have seen nothing like this in my copy and have not heard of others either having this.Looks like you got a bad copy.Send it back and then post some pics with the new copy.It is a great lens for the money.

I'm happy with this copy. There is still some CA and softness wide open, but better than my first copy. I will say that focusing at f/1.4 is a real challenge. I've ordered the Eg-s focusing screen, and live view on a tripod really helps.
My camera (5DmkII) reports that the 85 1.4 is a 50mm lens in EXIF. This is true regardless of which program I use to open the files (so it isn't just one program defaulting to 50 if the length isn't reported). Any idea how to get 85mm in EXIF?

Thanks,

Again, it is impossible that the lens is reporting 50mm. The camera must be guessing or defaulting to 50mm. There are no electronics at all in the lens.
The only way to get proper EXIF is to attach a focus confirm chip that has been programmed with EXIF of 85mm f1.4.

So, a quick examination of the EXIF data for photos in this thread--all the 5DmkIIs show 50mm, the 5D shots don't show any focal length, and the Nikon D700 shots show 85mm.
It's too bad there isn't a simple way to change this. Oh well.
