p.1 #1 · Quantified test for low-light / high ISO performance?
I've been thinking a little bit about the remarkably high ISO settings seen on the newer models. They're a bit difficult to consider since rarely does a camera reviewer have more than two cameras side-by-side to compare noise levels.
Has anyone ever developed a test to compare noise levels at high ISO settings? I envision a controlled light box where EV is exactly controlled, and RAW shots of a test pattern that get analyzed for noise levels. Perhaps regions of the colors in the sensor to see which channels are best/worst. Then score/count the noise based on contrast / size of noise grains, etc.
