The guy from Digital Picture said it was the most fun-per-buck lens Canon make. I'm thinking he is right!
I disagree, it depends on the individual. My most fun-per-buck lens is the 85 f/1.2LII

Robert, all I can say is that having you as a lens purchase consultant, poor old Yakim is surely doomed now. His wife will do him in sooner than later.
Robert,
Been there. Done that. All I have now is blessed silence, only occasionally interrupted by the old usual comments.
Peter,
Yes, I fear you are right. It will probably indeed come sooner or later.
Great shots Bobby, when I first looked at them I liked #2, today I like #3 as it shows the bird walking with an attitude, at least that's what I am seeing in the shot.
Hello Peter, this question brought a big smile to my face
Why, because of course you need this lens, if not for you but to educate us If you are like me and think you want something then it is inevitable that you are going to own it, 'keep it' is the question
So you just need to rationalize what the slight potential loss will be 'IF' you don't keep it However if you buy it slighty used it may wash out any losses!
This leaves us with whether you need a new one or a used one, see, that was easy I will be anxious to see your reviews my friend
Very nice, Peter. Nobody can say that the old 100 is not sharp - it is as sharp as any good L-lens. But the 100L is marginally better - it has better color .... with better AF and IS. It's like comparing the 85L to the 85L II .... or the 24L to the 24L II. Whether the difference is worth $400 is debatable but I certainly think it is. To me, the old 100 is simply a workhorse lens whereas the 100L IS is a fun lens with a high "feel good" factor.
You may want to hold on to your old 100. Don't sell it until you are convinced that the 100L is worth the $400 premium. If you decide that it isn't I am sure you can sell the 100L at a good price (good lenses hold their value) and charge the small loss to rental and bad advice from Karl and Bobby.

Karl and Bobby, what are friends for but help one spend some more money on an already out-of-control hobby.
I guess your words and images have tipped the balance over so I should get the lens. I will ask my long suffering family to get it for me for Xmas.
Thanx, Bobby, what's not to like about the current generation IS ?
Sell my old 100 f/2.8 USM ? Can't do that, Bobby.......that has been one of my best "close combat" BIF lenses.

There you go Peter, now you even have a pre-planned alibi if things don't work out, all the pressure is off you now and I am used to taking the blame for many of my friends buying toys, they always thank me and their wives just give me that 'wifey' stare
Too funny Bobby!
OMG Peter .... that pijun may be your Guardian Angel!

However, I have never used the 100/2, the 100/2.8 macro, or the 135/2L, so it's not possible for me to establish a comparative assessment. I can go off the test charts and tell you that among all the lenses mentioned, the 135/2L is the sharpest. But this should come as no surprise, since it has the L build, an f/2 max aperture, and does not have macro capability.
The 135L is a bit sharper also in my practical 1:1 test. But only if you mount the lens on a tripod or shoot with ~1/250 or shorter exposure. If you don't have enough light for that, the 100L will be sharper thanks to the IS.
The 100L is a great, very sharp and versatile lens. But I have to admit that so far I did not find its personality/signature and I find it very neutral and compared to lenses like 35-85-135 even a bit boring.
