I parted with my Canon twin lite and I've been debating on making a dual flash setup for macro and closeup nature photography work. In a financial perspective, this is a more cost efficient option than the Wimberley macro brackets that cost more than this unit each ($149 for the Kirk setup, $169 for 1 macro arm from Wimberley)
Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated!
I use the Kirk FB-8 which is a single arm version of what you have shown there. Overall it's a nice unit, built quality and finish are good. However, when mounting my 580EX I have to really tighten it down as much as I can, without putting real effort into tightening the knobs it will slip out of position. I've considered a smaller flash like a 430EX for it but for now I'm okay with just putting a little extra muscle into it. I also use a small Giottos ballhead on the bracket to give me more options as to flash direction, the MH1004 is what I have and it's nothing special but it was cheap and does the job.
Thanks for the reply - I use a 550EX and was planning on running 2 of these on the setup. I'll keep the weight factor in mind, maybe I'll give the ppl over @ Kirk a call soon.
Interesting. They look less adjustable than the Wimberley option, which can be positioned in any way at all because of the ball joints. That being said, if I were looking for one right now, I'd probably get the Kirk instead of the two Wimberleys I use. They really are expensive.
Thanks for all the input everyone - Looks like I need to get the ball rolling on this soon...May have an opportunity to head to Costa Rica this coming summer to do a lot of work with amphibians so my macro rig would have to be together and tested before I leave....
Guess it's time to call Kirk for some Q&A - I'll post some follow up if I get the rig...the only thing I have to do otherwise is pick up a tripod collar for my 100 macro - the mounting option for the camera is more than the dual macro bracket!
Just a little info, Wimberly sourced their extension arm from RAM mounting. I think you can buy individual pieces from RAM and make one yourself cheaper than Wimberley.
