Cool shot. I see some people asking if it is HDR, I'm just wondering how one would get an HDR shot of a moving vehicle considering you'd want at least one overexposed image that would mean a longer shutter time and even bracketed bursting you would end up with three images that are different enough that they'd be hard to put together. Please tell me if I'm wrong as I love HDR and it would be awesome to be able to do HDR of moving subjects.
Thank you As I've mentioned, this image is not an HDR. Moving subjects make it much more difficult, but it *can* be done. What I do is, I usually shoot the scene with all my HDR shots, then when the train is in the composition where I want it, I shoot that frame. I do 'normal' HDR except for the image with the train in it. After I've gotten the HDR where I want it, I then blend the HDR image with the train shot, using layer masks.

BTW Jack, Did you solve your "milky" LCD Problem?
Terry
No, not yet. I have the replacement LCD protective cover, but I can't remove the old one. It's *only* stuck on with some secret agent stickum stuff, but I can't get it to budge. One day soon I'm going to send to it the shop for repair/replacement. It's really not that big of a deal right now, but I would like to have it fixed.

Hey, you left some track in front of the train instead of having it almost running out of the frame. That looks MUCH better.
I doubt it's HDR. The shaded side is as dark as I would expect, and it's difficult to do true HDR on moving subjects. Most trains move at something like 40-50 mph, depending on class of track. This one looks like at least class 3.
Kent in SD
Hello Kent, thanks for commenting. Well, to be honest, I shoot them a lot of different ways. Some people like my 'rule of thirds' train shots, and a few like them more centered like this one. Glad you like this one!
The track here is 132lb welded rail on concrete ties. This train is heading into a 45mph zone going over the river and on into town. They are usually hitting 50mph coming into this curve.
I'm so very glad I didn't sell my D2x. Withdrew it from sale at the last moment thanks to the urging of a fellow FMer, who knew I'd regret letting it go. Was he ever right.
Great, great train shot. Great processing.
I've forwarded the page to my son-in-law, who's a train freak. Shoots trains every chance he gets. He's been shooting trains for over 30 years, ever since he was a kid. But he's never really managed a shot like yours. He shoots with a Canon 350D, poor fellow .... :-)

I wish I could get some different road names. Man, CSX stuff is boring
At least you aren't stuck with NS. Ever try to photo a Jumping Jackass at night? I am blessed with a pretty good variety of color schemes. I have DME when I'm in a blue mood, D&I when I want something bright and yellow, NENE or E&E when I need a bright red engine against the snow, Minnesota Southern when I want Geeps painted in the John Deere color scheme. And then there's BNSF with their color of the hour power. Never know what will show up on a BNSF train. Today it was KCS and CN. I have a shot somewhere of a BNSF train with eight engines, and every one had a different paint scheme. Downside is I live in Branchline Land, and trains can be hours apart. Or days apart on some lines. Of course, a mere two hours south of me is the UP double mainline with enough yellow to fill a monthly quota in just one evening.

I love your first image and man look how great the D100 stuff still looks , I will Always have a tender spot for that camera
