Apologies for missing this thread - thanks Yakim & Lars for the heads up; I've left a message for the department manager and will report back when I get a response.
PetKal; thanks for your suggestions; can't really disagree with you........

Thank you, Helen, it will be interesting to see what corrective action that group will implement, as manifested on the listing of the subject lens as well as elsewhere.

Description says:
"Internal dust, Haze, Fungus and condensation. Autofocus doesn't work" Sounds like buyer beware on this item
"Infernal dust, Hades, fun-guns and condescension. Auto-da-fé doesn't work."
Hmm, where was the lens used?
Now, let us see how enterprising some of you lads have been.
What if yet another typo crept into the lens description so that what they realy meant to say was " No internal dust, haze, fungus and condensation" ?
How do we find that out ? Well, from the horse's mouth, I guess.
If so, that lens might be put back in service for an estimated $1,000 (new hood+ AF repair).......that would bring the total lens cost to $3,500, assuming you are the only bidder. Now, where else can you buy a complete, functional, and not too ugly looking 500 f/4 for $3,500 ?

I'll bet you're right. Waiting to hear from Helen.

Guantanamo ?
That's an anagram of "manta guano". Didn't know they did that, but maybe they're related to the "tree sharks" that infest your bird feeders?

Jess, today you seem to be driven lexically even more than usual.
