p.1 #1 · High mag playtime

The rather inclement weather of the last few days forced me to have a play with a 10X objective lens from an old lab microscope I have at home. After a some tests to see whether I could actually get an image with it, I eventually fitted the objective into the middle of an old pentax body cap I had which allowed it to be fitted onto the front of a an old pentax fit extension tube set that I'd previously modded with canon fit Tmount. I ended up with the objective sticking out the front of a 75mm extension tube and put it on my 40D. Much to my suprise the image quality was not bad and gave almost exactly 10:1 magnification (2.2mm FOV width),

Couple of test shots of bits of an hibiscus.

Wow, I love the soft, abstract nature of these and looking forward to seeing more from this lens.

Thanks Gill and Brad for the comments.

Brad - I have tried some hand controlled focus stacks with the lens and it's not really feasable. Not sure if I'm interested in constructing the necessary macro rail rig to do them. Might just do some extrmely shallow DOF shots every now and then. It was just one of those things I've thought about trying for a while but only just realised how to simply DIY it with what I had to hand.

I'm amazed by the intricate beauty in these photos and also by your DIY skills.

Thanks DQE for the comments - wouldn't say my DIY skills are up to much, but I have over the years got pretty good at making largish holes in plastics (from constructing pond filters).
