Another great thing about Allens is he will accept two cards. You may not know this but I do a lot of selling here LOL and it goes into my PP account. Well sometimes I don't have enough in my PP account to buy a piece of gear I am looking for so my PP is short. What do I do? I call Allen tell him what I want give him my PP debit card tell him how much to take out then I use my banking debit card. As far as I know he is the only place that will do this. I know for sure Canoga, J&R, B&H and Adorama will not do this ...Show more →
You know this for sure? Nice to be certain. Certainly nicer to be right. B&H has no trouble applying multiple cards to one order if all the cards are in the customer's name.

I'm not clear either on who's responsible for what but the same logic would apply to Canon. Demand dropped due to the economic mess and they had to cut manufacturing costs, resulting in supply issues (which may or may not be the main reason prices have gone up - I'm sure Canon has quite a bit of leeway on prices for lenses given our propensity to continue spending.) To try to get their overall profit back up to "acceptable levels" when selling fewer lenses they probably bumped price a bit (perhaps along with retailers doing the same for the same reason) figuring -- accurately -- that people buying high-priced lenses weren't going to curtail their purchases for very long.
I'm sure somebody out there knows who's responsible for exactly what over the last year but the ones who know ain't saying! ...Show more →
I am pretty sure Canon is responsible. If it were the retailers, then why wouldn't Adorama (for example) keep their prices lower than B&H for competitive reasons? I don't see any other logical reasons why Adorama raises their prices when B&H does.
Just a sidenote- The 50D's price has gradually been dropping. This is absolutely phenomenal: A used 8+ condition 40D is on B&H for $599!!! I thought I got a good deal on it 6 months ago for $749!
B&H just got a big shipment of refurb lenses. Not a price drop, but a chance to get a lens for cheaper. What I love is when they drop the prices for the holidays, instead of raising it!

Care to share the store you purchased these lenses at the lower price?
Maybe if more people bought from these other stores, large online stores like B&H would have to drop their prices.
Allen's in Levittown Pa has been consistently and significantly lower than B&H on all sorts of items recently. Really good people too.
I've still been seeing various Canon items declining. Believe it or not, the BG-E2N has gotten a significant decrease. The BP-511A has also gotten a small decrease. In case you haven't noticed, the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM has dropped (and still has the rebate on it), and the f/4L IS too, I think. The 50D is still gradually falling. As you may notice, I pretty much only keep an eye on teles, so I don't know much about the wides' prices. The 5D Mark II has a grand $15 instant rebate on it.
I've never been to the B&H superstore, but personally, all experiences I've had with B&H's customer service has been exceptional. I also admire how they hold their religious beliefs above making money.

I have a B&H catalog from 2007, and the 300mm f/2.8L IS was $3899.95 US, and $3849.95 Imported.
That sounds right to me. I was lucky enough to get a 3 week old unused specimen in 2006 at a nice discount and only payed $3500. It was never $3299 new I'm aware of, certainly not in the last 4-5 years.

Being agnostic myself ... I don't see why God needs special attention on certain days. But, B&H does a great job whenever it is open, so, no complaints. I've been to their store twice and it's like a dream-scape for camera geeks.

Not wanting to make a religious argument on this photograhy forum, I will explain what I meant briefly (I could give you arguments with overwhelming evidence for God's existence). Since the Blue laws have mostly disappeared, many stores have chosen to stay open on Sunday (Saturday for Jews). This is not only disrespecting God, but showing where their true motive is- making money (and I don't think disrespecting God is worth it to make a little extra money on Sunday/Saturday). I just find it very unusual to see that a company that successful to close every Saturday and even sometimes for more than a week at a time. Personally, this shows me their integrity and that they are willing to give up potential profit for their own beliefs. B&H, you've got my business.
Edit: I might also add that, no, it doesn't make sense to give God "special attention" on certain days if there is no God. But if there is no God, then how can you explain the existence of anything on earth? Evolution sure doesn't work because how can something come from nothing by itself? So since there is a God, and he has told us to give Him "special attention" on certain days, then we should obey that.
Fair enough .. we both agree that B&H is awesome. That's all that matters.
The store itself is a joy to spend time in. Last time I went there, the Canon and Nikon DSLR sections were crowded, so crowded, with people waiting to see a demo of the new bodies. They're really efficient too - the overhead conveyor system is cool.
