If you have a Px on the slave then you can set the slave to manual flash, dial in the power on the slave then it will fire every time you take a shot, even if your on camera flash is in ETTL mode. What you lose is the ability to change the power from the camera. The nikon system is far better for that.
EDIT, no idea about 430's, sorry, works fine with both types of 580.
Thanks for the write up. Sometimes I've found that ETTL gives varied results depending on what the camera happens to meter on at a reception (white dress, persons face or dark suit).
Any chance you tried these on an AB flash unit?
I'm most interested in knowing if the 580exII on camera with the AB800 off camera can be triggered in HSS mode. *THEN* you can start overpowering the sun and still shoot at wider apertures...

The 430's WORK!!! I just figured it out. You just have to hold down the Mode button for a second. AWESOME!
I'm guessing her, guess it's dependant on the flash duration of the AB800, which could be 1/2000 or more and delay. Would be pretty cool if it works.

I updated the review with my awesome new findings thanks to Beni...

Andrew, gonna try this now. I'll let you know soon.

After trying it, it looks like you can not exceed 1/200 using a PX transmitter and a JrX receiver on an AB. Apparently you can using a JrX transmitter, but I don't have one.

Hum... I took my 580EX2 ... set it to MANUAL 1/32 power then set it to slave. As soon as I set it to slave it automatically went into ETTL mode. What am I doing wrong?

Look at my other post. Once in slave mode, hold the MODE button down for at least 1 second. Then it works. Brilliant!
Thanks Tony for the information. That is valuable for me to know. I've considered going the expensive trigger route to use that HSS feature with my strobe. Otherwise, my $30 transmitter + receiver set from ebay does just peachy for me (plus they don't force me to upgrade my flashes to very expensive 580ex's)

Andrew, I don't think you'll ever be able to do that with studio strobes since they work slightly differently to small flashes.
Small flashes work by charging a big capacitor and regulating the amount of the energy in it emitted to control the brightness.
Large studio strobes regulate the amount the capacitor is charged and then release all the power stored in it when popped.
HSS works by firing the flash multiple times during an exposure. With small flashes this can be done by limiting the amount of charge used with each pop. Studio strobes on the other hand would need to refill the capacitor between fires and they simply can't do this in time.
That's also why if you have an action sequence which requires 4 shots is very quick succession, you're actually better using a small flash set to 1/4 power, it can drain it's main capacitor 1/4 for each pop meaning it has never needs to recycle for those 4 shots. With a studio strobe though it must recycle for EVERY pop.

Kewl!
Well.. check the comments on your blog... I just pointed out that tahnkfully you're actually incorrect about the inability to set different manual output on the different ligths. Set the flash to RATIOS and in Manual mode instead of ratios you'll get to set 3 groups of manual power levels. Badabing badaboom!

How bout YOU check the comments!
I already responded... I think I didn't explain it correctly the first time, but we're both right.

I'm going to have to call your bluff on this one
Tell me with a straight face that you don't have AT LEAST two 580EX2 or one 580EX2 and a 580EX.
(Man I thinks you're an even worse pain in the a$$ than I am... I likes!) ha ha ha! Sorry for your wife though... maybe she can join my wife's "I'm living with a know-it-all" support group
