p.1 #1 · Portraits of a Korean War veteran. (Lighting questions)

I am helping out a family friend and taking some portraits of him in his military uniform. I have never photographed an elderly person before and I know that lighting them is a little different than, say, lighting a 24-year-old woman.

I have several setups planned, but I'm curious what others have done. Can anyone help give me some suggestions? Photos showing examples would be particularly helpful.

My goals for the photos: I'm going to be trying to make him look heroic, distinguished, serious (but somewhat friendly). I want to show some of his wrinkles/character in his face.

I will be shooting these portraits with a black background (as per his request.)

Google images of Irving Penn.

This was done at a large window, but a large softbox would work:
