Shot the 107th edition of the Sunflower Showdown last Saturday in Manhattan, Kan. K-State is surprising most people and are leading the Big 12 north division right now. KU, on the other hand, has now lost four straight.

Here's the story behind that shot: at the beginning of each game, Willie Wildcat, the K-State mascot almost always has some kind of video on the jumbotron that ends up with something happening on the field (usually with a make-believe of the visiting team mascot). And it usually ends up with Willie running full speed to midfield tackling the "dummy" mascot. Sounds like something fun to shoot and it would be except for one thing...there is almost always a video cameraman in the way messing up the shots.
This game they didn't have a video (or I missed it) and next thing I know I see Willie running full speed across the field. I just pointed the 400 and shot...didn't expect to get anything. Plus, I was too close for the 400 and couldn't get to the 70-200 in time. So whether I shot horizontal or vertical I wasn't going to have a decent shot.
I tossed this one is just 'cuz of the way that fake Jayhawk head is suspended in mid-air. And, since I'm a K-State grad and am glad the Wildcats won, I decided to keep the shot.
Sean was on the other side of the field and came up with something that was a little better, but he had cheerleaders in the way. Neither of us cared for what we got and would normally just delete these if it weren't for the significance of the game.
Ahhh. Ok. That makes sense. From what you do have in frame with that shot, I thought it might be on the sideline and I see the legs in football pants and I thought it might have been a case of play roaring off the field and into a mascot. That head floating in the air IS cool.
sean got two shots in the SI site's fan's of the week photo group. they are buried further back (with my 2, btw). some reason the editor went wild on the first few games. hey, it's still SI.

Scott - excellent quality and content as usual, I really enjoyed these. I think that Sean should start posting some of his work here. I'd love to see it.

Great shots Scott!!, As stated in one of my threads I'm shooting a US Football match here in the UK soon but I think I'm gonna struggle to get anything resembling footy compared with these . Kind regards Graham.
I am just saying gentlemen - MU is a joke, KU is a joke and you just cannot forget about NEB losing to iowa state is almost as embarrassing as losing to baylor. but KSU is traditionally a POS. so you cannot disagree with me that the entire Big 12 NORTH is a joke.
I will not be shooting the KSU game unfortunately but enjoy the troop of MU photogs that will be making the trip.
