thanks for the heads-up and I always respect Fred's judgment.
Oh no no no... its not from me. I'm just saying that a moderator will be closely looking at this thread. I didn't mean to give rise to any heads-up Thang. Sorry if it sounded like that.
When I first starting posting I thought the " quote the other person and respond with a comment of your own" thing that most of us are guilty of, was a bit ridiculous. However, I was a newbie at that time (over 4 years ago), so I just conformed with what I thought was the "norm".
I still don't mind if this same system is employed. As I see it, if an image or set of images keeps getting pushed to the front for the next year, than someone took a great freakin' picture! (i,e , those smokin' ass set of osprey images and / or thunderbird's outstanding accomplishment)
However, what I don't appreciate is when someone "bumps" their own thread back to the front page, because no one commented while it was on page one . In fairness, this happens very rarely.
Believe me I've had several posts that got pushed to page 2 or 3 with no comments and sat around wondering why no one took the time to comment. I , like most I'm sure, only try to post images that will evoke a response. This is how we learn, how we get better, and quite frankly, it's good for my ego
But I had to sit and watch those posts die because I refused to bring them back to the front on my own. If they didn't warrant a comment the first time around, then I must need to try harder. So I do.
I never know whether to keep thanking folks, pushing the thread back up, or wait until the frequency dies down and avoid getting in the last "thanks"

But yours is not THE OFFICIAL Holy Grail. Besides that, you used top-of-the-line equipment.
Sorry, but unless you can Zoom-bump your thread to the top every day, yours will just remain a second-rate Holy Grail.
Regardless, you have my blessing Just don't let it go to your head.

2 months is plenty, lest we have the Thunderboid flying forever.

Ooohhh, I hate when that happens.
As a newbie here, I can't tell you the value I have found in some older posts when doing a search. This forum is full of great images and some pretty good wisdom to boot. One of the most valuable tools in assessing how to respond to someone who's opinion or current attitude I may not like is to search older posts by that person. This allows me to discern if the person is just having a bad day or is truly a world class A-Hole
As I said on another post, it could be that it's time to review the intent of this forum and the rules pertaining thereto.
Posts ADVERTISING oneself, especially by professional photographers..., should be seen as INAPPROPRIATE USE of this forum. Limiting it to images of "Nature and Wildlife" seems like an easy way to avoid all of this silliness. We can learn a lot from great images and constructive C&Cs.
Somebody, please report THAT to the Moderators, Fred or whomever
Maybe there is a way to do this but I cannot find how to do it, perhaps if multi quoting were easily enabled the original poster could wait until the thread is a few days old and then do one thank you typ post addressing each person who responded and then that is that.
This can become an issue when you have a great deal of replies to your thread. Not so much and issue for many just starting out and building a base of followers. The commenting and replying is often beneficial to me and intended hopefully as constructive to others that I answer.
I have experimented with a few ways to reply and everyone knows I reply to all
When replying individually I try to hammer away as not to drop anyone else just posting and at times I do a complete reply to all on a page in one posting. Other times I will make my reply via PM as not to bump back up so to make way for others or hopefully kill the thread.
Sorry if I have ever offended anyone...........ZOOM, did I just beat you up a bit
I think we are aware of few continuing posts that are excessive, sooner or later they will pass and that will be that
Informative topic threads should always be accessible IMO. There may not be a good timeline rule that will work for the diverse topics we see and post here. Maybe there could be a button for the OP to hit to 'drop' from first page at will, thus relying on the OP to be the judge of enough is enough
Well - no wonder I keep walking away these days. I'm really starting to feel the forum has lost a certain something.......
Anyhow - I've voted 2 weeks. I'm basing this on the fact that most threads are done in a few days. Now - Mr Zoom's Holy Grail shots keep coming back - - justifiably so.... Also - to my chock I found my Dream Flowers on page 1 for a week with over 3000 views I'm truly chocked that my flowers did so well.... But it comes to show us that some threads to remain alive for a reason.
But I must say that I find it extremely boring to see the same threads always on page one. Especially when it's several months old & it's the photographer giving himself bumps. I do understand thanking people (as I do myself) but the milking of a thread is just poor class.....
PS Karl - - you give certain OPs far too much credit here.... I'm ever so sorry to have to say.
Lil - who tries to reply to about three people with each reply in her own threads....

So this is about you
If there's a rule set already by Fred (1 year)...where's the problem here? I really don't get it
What if everyone in here starts a thread and a poll about what they "personally" think it's annoying?
You'll get the whole 1st page filled w threads like:
I personally find very annoying the gray bg on FM...who else is w me? Vote!
I personally find very annoying people who comment on all the threads BUT MINE
etc etc
I think you get the point
This thread belongs to dpreview really.

I love the thrill of shooting. Let's just reduce the number of times the bump-a-matic can be used. Let the thread die as it may, and move on to bigger and better photographs.

No Nello, this thread is not about me. But for sure, I am a part of it. Of the 60 votes we have received so far, every single one is an expression of one's PERSONAL opinion.

Ok I see, but there's a rule already! If there wasn't any, than this thread would have it's reason. I still don't get it sorry
I bet if I start a poll on who finds annoying the gray bg here on FM i'll get 60 votes too! that doesn't validated as "useful" IMO
Some threads should be allowed to last a long time IMHO. For example those that amount to galleries, like the 220-page+ "alt-lens pics" thread, where one member actually takes the time to create an index of all pictures sorted by lens type, which is a very vauable database. Why would you want such threads to be curtailed?

What about Jim Wilson's Mustang Air to Air. That thread (I know. It's now the second thread) is over six hundred pages. I would hate to see that shut down.
It's already to long Nobody can read a thread that is over 600 pages. Do we like to have a lot of threads that last 5-10 years ?
I'll be the bad guy for the moment please hear me out, what my good buddy Thang is really saying is use discretion, let me explain; when I see an old thread coming back to live BTW this only applies to just one person and we all know who that person is and the person who brought it back has NEVER posted or participated in this NW forum and the poster has 1 or few posts and has just joined the forum or been inactive for a long time and does ZERO, NADA, BIG O, 0 with other threads you can pretty much conclude who that person really is and what the purpose or the agenda could be.
Lets not allow our individual and collective intelligence be insulted or challenged by one poster who is in dire need of attention.
