I met my wife for free. So far, I has been a great deal, and I have had her body longer than any of my camera ones, and it still looks and handles the same as when I met her. Her auto focus is even better than when we first got married, but I am haven't decided if that is a good thing or not. Thank god for Japanese quality control!
Careful with fast auto focus of your wife when you are trying to lock your subject

Best reply so far! Careful...sometimes the 'free' stuff comes with a very high cost at the end!

how did you know it was hot and not just poorly priced?
Hmmm........indeed, if the lens came with its Canon box, that would have been a good price for the box alone.
Whether it was de facto et de iure hot or not, I would have bought the lens from a reasonably reputable looking and licensed storefront pawn shop based on two assumptions:
(1) The pawn shop exercised their due dilligence in ensuring the rightful ownership of the item they were selling, and
(2) They either made a mistake in pricing it, or the lens was not (fully) functional.
Either way, deals like that border on fantasies and remind me so much of folks who have bought a genuine Strad violin in some country antique store for $500.
However, for each one of those, there are probably 10,000 who have grossly over paid for a fake Strad made in Korea or some such, believing that the instrument was a genuine Strad.

Yeah, i'm in fairfax... i did see that, along with some jerk also posting that it must be a scam because it was a low price. i was going to hit the guy but didnt have the time to make a transaction yesterday so i didnt bother... congrats on that one
Bought alot of quality glass from BH when the dollar was very low to our Swedish currency, bought lenses such as 500/4, 85/1.2 etc for half price of that they cost in Sweden! Sweet Deal for me i can resell them today almost 2 years later with a good profit if i wish.
Actually this was my best day ever. A guy advertised on Craigslist with a BNIB 1DMKIIn for $3500 with 24-70.
When I went to buy it he had 2 more exactly the same, all with Dell paperwork and invoices. It was end of year and he was spending for tax purposes. I bought all three for $9000.
I sold 2 bodies for $6400 and eventually all three 24-70 for $3000 and kept a MKIIN.
Has never happened again and I don't count on it. My ship came in!
1. 40D with 28-135 Kit lens and 8gb Extreme III - $600.00 (the man who sold it to me bought a Leica M8.2 + 28mm Kit, and also the 50mm 1.0, and has never shot off the basic programs or "green" setting)
2. 50mm f/1.4 LNIB with all packaging and 100mm USM f/2.8 Macro LNIB with Canon UV haze filter and B+W MC CPL - $500.00
Bought two 5Ds and somthing else that I can't remember. That was back when some third party was doing the rebates. I sent in everything for an $800.00 rebate. I got the run around about not submitting proper documentation. I called and asked for a supervisor. Who knows thay may have put the janitor on the phone but eventually they sent me rebate check for $800.00. While waiting for the rebate I called Canon customer service and explained the run around I was getting. I received another rebated check for $800.00..
I did the right thing with the second check..

Back when I shot film usinf Nikon F4s I found a Nikon 55mm micro in the box at a garage sale. It had a sticker on it for $5 I said "Really? five dollars?" and she said "Ok, four."
3 1/2 years ago I just happened to browse the buy and sell forums and I bought a like new 5D with a 17-40L 4gig cf cards , bag for 2k.
That was a sweet deal then, right place right time!
Take a look at this page. I didn't order from here, but this guy obviously doesn't know anything about pricing cams: D700-$1000; D5000-$2000; D3x-$1200!!!...OK
