But, I wonder...could you have purchased it, brought it to the police and see if anybody claims it (with reasonable evidence) if not, you could pick it back up, clean conscience, 90 days (or whatever?) later...

didnt touch it as it was hotter than hell.
I got two of my favorite lenses from a couple of friends, both glass in as new condition:
Prime sharp 100-400 IS - USD 800.00
400 2.8 L IS - USD 4K
My brand new Sigmonster DG (possibly among the first batch of DG versions made) was sold to me by the local Sigma distributor at around USD 4.5K way back 2004.
I bought a 100-400 from a lens rental place for $200.00 a couple of years ago. It sucks cosmeticly and since it had been wet I'm sure they thought it was going to die soon. Works perfectly so far.

A 1992 Toyota worth at best $1,000 was trade-in at $4,500 value for a brand new car through the "Cash-4-Clunker" program, the money I saved was more than enough to get a new Canon 7D - for free!

So it was a 'dream fantasy' and all you could come up with was a 300/2.8...not even the IS version
