Funny thing about travel abroad (at least for me): Having someone to share experiences, provide conversation, etc. has merit, for sure. But those trips I made to far-off places alone were usually more meaningful to me because I DIDN'T have anyone else. I was immersed in the travel experience for days at a time with no real verbal communication (in Asia, but not in Europe), so I pretty much had to concentrate on all the other "foreign" things going on, most of which turned out to be really worth the sacrifice. Of course, after several months of this, when I heard a native English speaker, I pretty much cornered the person and begged them to talk to me .
