How much is the computer you're using right now worth; and even though it has lost a lot of value on the open market over time, how valuable is it to you right now?
Good analogy I think.
It's taken me 3 years to get my entire kit working as well as it should. That includes the trips to Canon for service and the process of me learning the intricacies of each lens and body that I have. Sometimes it takes us as long to perfect our techniques as it takes Canon to ferret out a problem like the MKIII had. When you get yourself and your gear to work in harmony it is a beautiful thing that has a lot of value. That kind of value has little to do with the market price of your equipment. It has everything to do with your ability to produce exceptional results as photographer who really knows his gear and uses it effectively.
There are plenty of photographers on this board that get better results than I do using much older equipment. I don't think they are spending much time anaylizing how much their gear is worth.

How many of you guys have the 1D mark III here ??
I still have one.
I had my first Mark III back to June 2007, and had quite a few since then, you know what I have been through before the latest AF fix, very painful memory for sure
But I am happy with my Mark III after the latest fix.

Wow I wish I was rich and powerful enough in being able to dismiss a $2000+ camera as "just a tool"
If you use it for work, then it is just a tool. It is something you need to get a job done. A more expensive tool that many people have, which usually costs more, is a car.
