Things were better in "old" days of the, because we didn't have as much stuff to throw around. I was lucky to have one pair of tennis shoes.
Aye...and ye were lucky my friend...
you had a pair of shoes!
...in the old days...
I only had a shoe lace....and only one at that...a short one...a broken one in fact....and I had to use that for a belt so after rising at 3 to milk the cows, feed the chickens, chop the wood, fetch the water, light the stove for my poor ole ma (may she rest in peace) I could carry my books to school, which was 3 miles away on a snow covered road, walking barefoot, uphill in the rain......etc..etc...
Aye...ye were lucky!
Of course....all this just added for humor and to make someone smile.

Let's cut out the thinly-veiled attacks at the parenting skills of others. If you can't contribute positively to the discussion...
KEEP YOUR DAMN LIPS CLOSED AND YOUR KEYBOARD STILL!

And who made you all of our parents? People complain about kids that live like pigs because they lack control over them, and you are going to tell a bunch of people on an internet forum to behave!! That is ripe or you are one hell of a comedian. If people don't like the comments about their parenting, they shouldn't post things like this on an internet forum.
I don't put up with that kind of BS from my kids. Their rooms don't have to be perfect, not by a long shot, but clothes all over the floor and un-made beds are just not tolerated, I don't give a dam how old they are. You live in my house, it's my rules. Clean room, every day + chores. No telephone, TV or internet in the room (computers are allowed for home work). What I see in some of these room photos are just plain unnecessary.

I am in complete agreement with Andre on this. Very well said. Our house needs to be kept neat and clean the way we want it. As long as our kids stay in the house it will be per our basic standards of keeping things neat and clean. Our kids are supposed to make their beds before they come out of their rooms each morning, plus no clothes anywhere else in their rooms except the closet or drawers or in the laundry basket. Our daughter who has now graduated from college thanks us for putting our foot down when it came to keeping her rooms neat and clean. She had a tough time dealing with her sloppy room mates in her college dorm and appreciated our efforts even more. This is not an attack on anybody's parenting skills but just pointing out the fact that if you let your kids continue to make a mess of their rooms without consequences their rooms will always look like a bomb has gone off in their rooms. It is your house so nobody else has to deal with that mess but you. Also what is the point of posting pictures of kids' messy rooms where, besides documenting the mess, there is no other pictorial value to the images where other forum members can offer any comments on the pictures.

See, that's the thing, it's not really about control, it's about disipline. I was never required to keep my room clean, however I was required to keep the rest of the house clean. Since I spent so little time in my room, it was a very neglected place. However since moving I've had to keep my room in a state of normalness, because I would go nuts studying here if it wasn't that way. The only thing I never manage to keep in an organized state is the constantly growing stack of books and research around my desk. That is necessary. Creative Process
It's like my camera bag. You can tell exactly how busy my life is by the state of it. Wedding season starts and the lens covers and caps come off, replaced at the end.
By the way, people post stuff like this because for many, this forum is part of their community in their life. It's interesting to see the men (and women) behind the veil of the internet.

Well said, you are correct, control is the wrong word for that age, it is about teaching kids disipline; most especially, self-disipline. My wife and I choose to do that through a multitude of avenues for our older kids. One is keeping their room functional and clean. The another is the afore mentioned chores, like folding laundry, doing dishes, cleaning the kitchen, picking up the house and assisting in taking care of younger siblings. The program is modified to the age of the child, and we teach them the skills appropriate to each task(s). And trust me, with 4 kids, there is plenty for my wife and I to do, even with the kids helping out.
