The two stores I buy from have in the past kept the first camera as a demo - believe me, I tried to talk them into selling it to me - it was true for both the Mark II and III. They need something to show their customers, and to let the staff get to know the product.
I'm sure it differs from place to place, and size of store. These stores sell a lot of cameras.
Those two stores are bizarre. That doesn't make sense at all until there's more stock to be able to use one as a demo.
Rule number one: don't piss off your customers. If 5 people have pre-ordered, you get 5 cameras and keep one as a demo, your fifth customer is going to get the sh1ts.

Right I've spoken to the two other stores I've preordered from (I'm at no.1 at both of them) and the first one said
: No real word from Canon. Possibility of getting them before Christmas, but they think it unlikely
The second one said
: They were expecting a small number yesterday but nothing turned up. Now they expect delivery for Wednesday.
No1 at two different stores?? I'd say you've got a better chance that I have of seeing one next week. Oh, and if I were 5th on the list and my dealer received 5 but kept one as a demo I'd be more than a little pi$$ed off.
Neither of those stores are Canon Pro dealers though Pierre like the other one we are both with, so the chances are they are not high up on the food chain!
12800 looks more usable than 6400 on the 7D. Wow. I think we have seen some lovely jumps in sensor performance with this last round of canons. can't wait to see what the next full frame sensor ends up being capable of.

just a messenger from dpr, don't know story behind it. 1d4 iso profile seems much better than any current canon/nikon bodies
I'd be surprised and very impressed if the 1D4's noise is lower than the FF Nikons, I don't think it can be. There will be plenty of testing and arguing about I'm sure. It doesn't matter either way though, unless Nikon puts an EF lens mount on the D3s, makes it 16 Mpixels and 1.3x.

I hope you don't think it can be because of the "FF produces lower noise than APS" thing do you?
Because it's not as straight forward as that. All things being equal, maybe that'd be true. But all things are NOT equal. A crop sensor CAN produce less noise than a FF sensor.
Technology changes.
Technology changes, but when comparing cameras of the same generation larger pixels tend to win in the noise department. I'll happily be wrong in this case though.

Not necessarily true. You mentioned same generation, not same manufacturer.
Anyway, I am curious if the 1D4 can match the D3s for high ISO performance. It doesn't have to be better... it's darn impressive if they can equalize them already.

This morning's update is not good news:
No MkIV's will be shipped before Christmas and my dealer is closed until the 4th of January so it looks like I'll be waiting until 2010. Others may be luckier if their dealers remain open between Christmas & New Year.
Yep, Pierre. Just got a call from them too. They said they got a call from Canon, who have small numbers in stock in the UK, but are now NOT going to ship until after Christmas when they have larger quantities. Considering a lot of the independent camera stores will be closed over Christmas and NY, that means only the big e-tailers might be able to fill orders (Jessops, Jacobs, Amazon) before the New Year.
Me? Well that's the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm buying in Oz.
Probably going to be end of Jan, mid Feb now!
