We purchased a battery grip and was using rechargable batteries (2650mAh). Once the tech had us go back to original battery, we were able to get 8fps.
We always use these batteries on our Nikons, but with Nikon grips, we use 8 batteries. The Canon grip only uses 6. Maybe not enough juice....
Stupid us, we had tried everything else last night after our testing. Had left original battery in car.... ugggg! So glad we figured it out, the weather is going to be great this weekend.

Not going to read 5 pages here but did you check if 'High iso noise reduction' is ON ? That setting can hinder 8fps even though you are not on high iso.
Not going to answer someone who won't read the answer already there
I do not use high ISO noise reduction in camera, nor auto ISO. I only use original Canon bty, no grip and have the issues as stated. Solution is elsewhere.

IIRC, DPR of 7D does say something to the extent of "Question is not whether the camera is fast enough for you, are you fast enough for the camera"

Thanks for advice!
So I will caveat this with the fact that once the light dropped off outside, I was back to 4fps...fwiw, I also had the Hi ISO NR off...most every feature in a manual mode except the AF on the lens....FW 1.1.0 update....
I have not been able to duplicate the mysterious burst rate drop-off. Shot a game last night - ISO 3200, Manual mode, 1/500, f2.8, RAW, AWB, in-camera NR disabled, ALO disabled, firmware 1.1.0 installed - and the 7D kept going at it's normal 8 fps.
The equivalent ambient light level is around ISO 3200, f2.8 and 1/100 of a second for proper exposure. You had an f2.8 lens on so the fact that you were getting a proper exposure at 1/500 second means you had five times the light above the level at which the FPS will drop.

to bad someone here couldnt provide video proof of their slow down problems and show how camera is set....
Huh, it is so easy to replicate, and everything has been described. In manual mode, (both AF and exposure), settings unchanged, point the camera towards something above the brightness limit, it gives 8 fps, point it towards something darker than the limit, and it slows down.
