Rattlesnake bites can be fatal. Tiger rattlesnake venom has a fair amount of neurotoxic properties to it, as well as hemotoxic properties.
Although I do get close at times, I keep a safe distance.
A Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 was used for these, slight crop on the first pic.

He's a southern Az specimen. They tend to be a lot more colorful than their bretheren found in the vicinity of Phoenix.

Reminds me when I used to collect them for zoos. I developed the belief, leave them alone, photograph them but leave them be after a few years of the work. It didn't help getting bit by an Asp viper but my general feeling is that it is great to see them in images and free.

I had always heard about pink rattle snakes, but have never seen such a nice picture.
At 70mm you were rather close.
