Great comparison Alek!

Thanks very much for sharing your well thought out and clearly documented tests with the community.

Any chance you're planning some kind of AF accuracy bake off between the 50D and 7D?

Thanks again!

P.S. Yohan: Nice spot on the vertical line on the 7D - I didn't notice that earlier - note sure what's up with that, but not easily seen on other images.

Weird, eh? To my eyes it's only really noticeable at ISO 6400, and by 12800 the random noise mostly obscures it. Anybody else have any ideas on this? Stitched sensor?

What's becoming very apparent with all the tests coming out is how Canon have magically eliminated the horizontal banding that plagued xxD bodies. Magic, I tell ya.

Good to know for when I need to shoot pictures of the inside of my lens cap and underexpose six stops.

That's the first thing I noticed in those samples.

Funny! ;-)

But the images are just highlighting the residual noise that is there - i.e. look closely in the shadows of your pictures and that's the "crud" you'll see - I was surprised myself looking at the originals and doing a Photoshop threshhold to see how much stuff is down at the 1-5 RGB level, even at low ISO's.

Great. Looks like they solved the pattern noise problem.

Alek, thank for great work. You need to rename the tittle to include 5d2.

I like how clean it is even at ISO 800, which was my first priority. For wildlife work, I'd rarely go over ISO 800, so having clean image at that ISO is great news and anything else is a bonus. Looks great even at ISO 1600.

Now to wait for the AF feedback in servo mode.

Seriously, why hasn't this been done yet?? I know it's perfectly capable of getting good action shots, but I really want to know how it compares to a 1D in terms of keepers. I'm guessing it's about halfway between a 1D and an xxD. If it is that big of an improvement, will that be good enough for them to get my money? And with yet another mis-focusing lens arriving today, do I even want to give them on of my money?

Sorry guys, I have no inner monologue.

Yep, great for astrophotography. Here's a pushed 40D shot and then processed. Looks like even more can be squeezed out of the 7D.

Can it be? the 5D has the advantage up to ISO800 but at ISO1600 and up the 7D actually looks better.
