p.3 #1 · Nikon D3s in October

It may also be one of those things they do because a sufficiently-large number of photographers demanded it, who in turn demanded it because they see how the market is changing and how their own needs are changing. Maybe you're just behind the times and evolving more slowly than others.

Maybe. But in reality, none of us here knows why Nikon did it, or why the industry in general is moving in that direction, or whether it's necessary, or whether it's even a good thing. All we know is that you don't understand it, and that I don't know how to use it... but I'll learn it and I'll see how to get the most use out of it to make my customers happier and earn additional revenue.

You can resist change, or you can use it to your advantage.

I'm a pro photographer. I think it's about bloody time they put HD video into an SLR. Why the hell didn't they do it earlier. If they only listened to me.

New rumors from NR are putting it at 102,00 ISO as its upper limit. I'll be interested to see if that pans out.

I gotta say while the d3s is probable, the specs seems rather a bit of a major jump...

As a working sports photographer/photojournalist, I can tell you that adding a larger buffer and video capabilities would be a huge improvement to the D3. So many people are anti video when it comes to DSLR's. In my experience, these same people either don't make their living with photography, or they make their living in a realm of photography that hasn't been invaded by video (yet). Wedding photographers, PJ's, sports photographers, etc. All of these people are going to need to do at least a little video in the future to remain competitive. It's just the way of the world. You

That's fine and dandy. I take sports photos as a freelancer for a local paper that sometimes include NCAA and Professional sports.
I hope that you know that when you request credentials that your DSLR video camera will require that you request video credentials. Since the networks for some professional leagues will not allow their own affiliates to video the games (they have to use pool video), what chance do you have of getting in?
"But I won't take video with this camera," you'll say. Tough will be the answer.
All it's going to take is some numb nuts jerk somewhere around the country to post a video he took with his DLSR, and you will get hassled every time you try to do your job.
Still want video?
I think video is a great value added feature for the consumer and prosumer cameras. But I don't want it in my D3 or it's replacement.

This isn't my area of expertise(if I actually have one! ), but why can't this be dealt with via some kind of contract or NDA ? As in, you publish it when you agreed not to, and your black listed or face legal ramifications?

I've heard this sentiment before, but in my opinion it's a pretty unlikely scenario. You think the NCAA and professional leagues are going to just stop letting in press because of a feature on their gear? In your scenario, an SI shooter who happens to own a DSLR w/ video could get turned away just because of that. I just don't see that happening. Yeah the rules that these leagues put out can be kind of tight and ridiculous at times, but they aren't going to all of the sudden shut the press out, because that would shut them down sooner or later. I understand the argument, it just doesn't seem at all likely in the real world. I haven't seen any stories about any 5DMKII photographers getting turned away yet, and that's certainly a pro level camera IMO.

Photojournalists are having to adapt to the way they tell stories, and the future is going to include video in some capacity, whether we like it or not. There are some stories that are better told by video than by stills, and because of that I welcome video in my DSLRs. Why would I want to lug around a whole bunch of separate video gear when I can have it in my DSLR already? And just as photographers are going to have to adapt to changes, so are the NCAA/NBA/NFL/NHL/ETC.

Humorously enough it's also those same newspaper shooters who will benefit the most from the ability to shoot video, assuming papers get their act together and move into the 21st century. I've not been asked what camera I shoot with at events like that, is that normal procedure for you? Granted I've never shot NFL or NCAA.

I'm not sure it's a really realistic scenario, of course they'll notice if you bust out a parabolic mic and a steady cam or fluid head tripod with your 5DII. Really they're just going to have to get used to it, make rules and hope everyone plays fair. It's inevitable in the 1DIV and D4. I suppose they could get all ridiculous and require shooters to have video capability disabled, like workers in government buildings with laptops and cell phones that come with cameras. Man, that'd be ridiculous.

I am sure that you have read the SEC's policy regarding access to football games. The networks have paid hundreds of millions of dollars for exclusive rights to NCAA football. They are not going to crawl into a hole an cry because people want to tweet asd blog with video on the sly. They are going to fight. If it means no sideline access, They will dictate those terms to the stadiums and the stadiums will listen.
This hasn't happened yet.
Although some of the concert/band photographers have been stopped because they have been accused of shooting video of the bands. So far it's just a minor hassle. I really hope it stays that way.
BTW, when those cell phones start shooting HD video and have sideline access, then they will cross that bridge when they get to it.
Hey, I'm just the messenger.

i agree - companies need to stop getting caught up in the dual or triple functional device...hence cell phone cameras and shit like that.....lets concentrate on improving the actual product first for its initial intent

Man,

Imagine what push processing would be like if we were talking film... Then, I imagine a lot of folks who subscribe to fm have little to no idea what is meant by "push processing."

You just dont get it. If it doesn't work for you then don't whine about it. 1080 video along with the speed of the D3s will be AMAZING for any PJ/event photographer. Not only could you take ungodly amount of frames in a matter of seconds, you can take HD video as well.

I wouldn't call video a toy. It's another way to express creative motives. I am also not an adult with lots of money but a student working towards a field in photography. Video is the future. Get ready to embrace it.

Why not? It's nice in a cheap camera with a tiny sensor and too much DOF, but it's not nice in a great camera? Why, do you only want to shoot terrible video? Do you not want to shoot the best-quality you can in any mode of image capture, whether its one image or a stream of them?

No, it's for adults who have a broader perspective than you do, who can see more ways to create art and transmit a message and evoke powerful emotions by using more tools to have more ways to capture their images. It's for those who look forward, not backward.

There are already ways to use WiFi in Nikon and Canon cameras. Sports Illustrated uses them to get images from the field into the editing trailer seconds after they're taken, even before the game pauses and much faster than any human could run a card over there. If they find WiFi to be a useful addition to the camera, I can't see why you would presume to condemn it as a stupid move.
