friend recently met with some big dogs at Pentax in Tokyo about upgrading from his Pentax 67 to something digital and they suggested choosing one of the 100 colors of this new PoS as an upgrade to the 67!
Why didn't they suggest the 645D? It's coming out in spring 2010...30Mpixels. Not quite 6x7 resolution or a Hasselblad, but decent for $10K...

Because he didn't want to drop 10Gs on a new system that might not be supported in two years.

Wait a sec...a 6x7 is equivalent to a massively high #pixels if he digitizes it now. This usually means $$$$$
What did he expect to spend to replace it in the digital world?
I would have expected medium format....maybe a Hasselblad digital back.
If he just wants to replace it w/ a DSLR, he should just be looking at a K20D or K7 and skip the K-x. Or Sony's A900 if he wants FF w/ lots of pixels (but he'll spend again lots of money...probably $5K after lenses)...
And on a more embarrassing note, I've lived in the Denver metro area (which includes Golden) my whole life and never knew Pentax America was based here.

Yeah he was looking at medium format digital.
I'm not sure what he wants then. He wants MF digital. Doesn't want to pay $10K? Or doesn't want to pay $10K from Pentax?
He could get a used previous gen 20MP Hassy MF for around $4-6K, but he'd have to swap all his lenses. I think he can get a 6x7 lens to 645 lens adapter for Pentax (?) if he goes that route.
Anyways, he has lots of choices. Having the Pentax route suggest the K-x is pretty amusing

no they didn't. they bracket the D-lighting strength and allow you to choose which one you like better.
Interesting...so their HDR doesn't actually combine bracketed frames like Pentax's does? If it's just bracketing d-lighted images, that's just bracketing, not HDR...
that's right. it was never claimed to be HDR. anyone who thought so and started spreading that was ignorant. the Pentax HDR implementation isn't useful either. it only produces a JPEG from the three images, not another RAW file. waste of time.
Herb...

Pentax sure packs a lot of features in at good price points.
The high ISO capabilities seem very impressive. They were always pretty good at retaining detail at high ISO's, but usually you paid a price in excessive noise. It looks like they have found a great balance here.
Aside from the fact that it won't display the active AF point in the viewfinder this is the perfect entry-level camera, in my opinion, especially considering the price.
So iso performance is greatly improved now. Good job.
Next task for Pentax: bring up the DR to the level of the competition (or better), to make RAW more useful.
" The K-x is surprisingly a lot better better in low light than its bigger brother K-7, and is no doubt one of the currently best performing APS-C cameras in low light."
a pentax+ low light+ best.....three things I dont usually see in the same sentence.
