one word of caution, Samyang (and all its Sakar brand mates, ... Vivitar Series 1, Bower, Polar, Falcon, Sakar, Digital Concepts, Digital Innovations, Rokinon, etc.) aren't being honest about their Focal Length claims.
The Vivitar Series 1 7mm f/3.5 FE is closer to a 10mm Fisheye (and the Samyang 8mm along with it...), yet still a very nice lens. (I have the Vivitar Series 1 version).
I just wish they would add an AF-Assist to these lenses. They should still be able to offer them at these pricepoints with the AF-Assist added.
Has anyone seen any pictures of the actual lens? Or is it still a bit of vapor ware?
Either way, I hope it's good, not because I want it myself, but because I want them as a company to succeed. Good quality mf primes for cheap, not a bad deal. Looking at thier 8mm and 85mm, but this one I think I'll let pass (till a potential FX upgrade )
Theres some web-size sample pics on their site taken with a d3x. There is a bit of distortion (looks a little wavy) but sharpness looks very even across the frame at f4
They look very promising. The center resolution looks very good. The corners sharpen up substantially by f8. There is barrel distortion, but I don't see CA.
It looks like a mustache distortion and not a straightforward barrel distortion in these pictures. Not too bad though. And the flares are not bad in these pictures either.
Those samples are quite good... rather impressive for a cheap lens for sure.
If a no-name new lens manufacturer can make a sharp/decent 14mm f2.8 lens for around $450-$500, gotta wonder how much profit Canon and Nikon and other manufacturer's are getting out of us for their crappy 14mm lenses....
Last I checked the Canon 14mm was around $2k and the discontinued Nikon was around $1300-$1400.
what an excellent way to sell an new/unknown lens... d3x raw files!
i wouldnt worry about the distortion... just drop a few files off to http://epaperpress.com/ptlens, buy the software and your done. performance seems good enough to resolve the stepping in the d3x's sensor.
$400 bucks is a long way from $2000... i will get one
