A friend's son is the Drum Major at the local High School... they wanted some halftime pictures, so I figured I'd give "Friday Night Lights" a shot. I usually just shoot middle school youth league.
Night game, so I tried flash football for the first time... 550EX on a 1D Mark II. It was tough. The strobed lighting turned out better than I thought it would. But I was in the stands... not on the sideline... too far away. I didn't crop any of those yet.
After the first quarter, I gave up on my learning experience with the flash and I tried high ISO and 200/2.8L on a Rebel T1i that's been sitting around for a while.
These are all from the Canon T1i (Rebel 500D) at ISO 3200, 6400, and 12800 (no NR!)...
Jeez. Where was this game played? At the new Cowboys stadium? Seems like there was tons of light there.
Aside from some missed focus here and there, the exposure and color balance are dead on. Very well done, indeed. Very impressive given the equipment used.

ISO 12,800, 1/500 at 2.8. Yep. That there is a like being on the beach in Hawaii at noon.

nice captures... several could be cropped tighter.
I try to keep my shots cropped to a 1.50:1 or a 4x6 aspect ratio... most people order 4x6 prints. So I usually end up with one side being a little loose on the crop, but IMHO that's better than someone receiving a print with a missing head.
You did a great job. I would consider some cropping but man you nailed it with that 500D. Impressive effort and the high ISO is just super. I had a chance to shot a few with a 7D (pre production) last week and man is that going to be a machine. Everything people think they know about APS-C sensor can go in the trasher, the rules have changed.
These are some really nice shots. I think after running thru noiseware they are really good.
I really like 2,3, 5 and 8...
Very well done, under very difficult lighting conditions..
I almost deleted #3 because it seemed a little soft (as is #11), but I liked the way our Defense was closing in on the ball carrier.
Same with photo #5... Defense #75 looks like a train roaring into town. Sometimes missed focus on the ball carrier can be salvaged as stock shots of the Defense.
