Come on Whayne. DPP isn't so bad. You can handle it.
No I'm adverse to pain and that's what I find using DPP is. If god said you can only continue photography if you use DPP, I'd take up scrap booking instead.

there are simply too many people out there, both professionals and amateurs alike, who have tarnished preconceived notions about the 1DIII.
It's a matter of debate I think, whether it's "too many people", or relatively few people, making a lot of noise...

Yes I agree but only time will really tell. All depends on the actual performance of the 7D, especially the Servo auto focussing. The nearest competitor is the 1DsMkII.
The 1D MkIII at 10mp is just not enough when even a P&S G10 has 15mp.
If the 7D can focus anywhere near as well as a 1DsMkII, then the 7D will be super value, and one can see used 1DsMkII prices crashing to below 1k.
It appears Canon really want to be No1 in the pro category and the recent bold move by Canon to raise lens prices indicates that they are coming out with some irresistible new technology.
Personally I think it boils down to one thing: whether or not Canon have managed to squeeze 18 meg into a tiny sensor and made it work consistently better than on the much-criticised 50D.
I mean in the real world, where not every exposure is perfect and people's processing skills aren't as good as the Canon pro's

The build of the 1 Series is much better than the D series, better weather sealing, better battery life, more customization, and the MkIII has about 1.5-2 stop noise advantage over the 7D from images I've seen so far.
The 1.3x crop is also much nicer than 1.6x crop too for DOF purposes.
People who say 10MPixels are just not enough because there are point and shoots with that many or more, they know nothing, and are people who buy cameras just to be able to brag to others they have the latest and greatest (most people in these forums). I've seen gigantic billboard ads printed from an 8MP 1DMkII that look fantastic. Unless you are doing stock photography, or constantly printing larger than 13x16 for weddings, 10MP is plenty.
Exactly, see above about billboard ads from 8MP 1D MkII's.
mabidally can bring his 15MP P&S to an event and I will bring my 10MP 1D MkIII. Let's see who can sell more prints.

Get EVERY shot perfectly framed do you? Never need to crop? You MUST be very good.
Nothing wrong with model loyalty, but if you've ever used a 1Ds3 or a 5DII you'd know that 10 meg really isn't enough now.

Well, in reference to FM you may be right, but turn on any sporting event and look in the crowd, along the sidelines and courtside and in the photographers booths. If you had done that a couple years ago you would have seen a lot of white, now the sight is awfully dim. You can't base anything off the forums since the sample size, for lack of a better term, is way too small. This is why I keep an eye out when watching a game, which when I combine several games a week I can come up with a pretty good idea.
I used a 1 DsMkII for some wildlife and bird photography and after some hard cropping it still allowed some big files. After this experience I really feel that 10mp is just too little especially for a 36 x 24 exibition quality print after some cropping as well.

BTW do you know the resolution at which big billboards are printed at?

Do you mean to say that 7D would be worse than 40D? From what I have seen, 1D mkIII does not have much more than 0.5 stop advantage (less than 1 stop, for sure) over 40D. 1D mk III is not better, as far as noise is concerned, than 5D (classic)
Pull up the canon 1dMK3 on the left and canon 7d on the right.
On each side, go to the ISO 6400 still life photo and click through to the full res version.
Note the red fabric on the wheel layout…it sure looks like the lowly 10MP 1DMK3 is showing more detail than the 18MP 7D…or am I missing something?

I did a comparison of the 7D vs the 1DMkIII at ISO800, uprezzed both images to 10800pixels and took 100% crops. After uprezzing to equal size at 10800 pixels (36" at 300DPI) the 7D seems to have more textural details.
However the 1 DMkIII has better colour rendition and less noise.
