Canon will make you wait two months for the hood, and they are going to keep the stock low to keep the hood price up at $80. Hope the ebay guys can roll out a cheap hood fast enough so that you won't be hoodless for Christmas.

I think people are missing the point of how much the currency markets are affecting this at the moment.

The £ and $ have both fallen over the past 6 months killing the price of lenses. Look at some of the price tracking websites and you can see how much the price of say a 70-200 F4 IS has gone up. In the UK last year it was as little as £649 and when we could get $2 to £1, fast forward to today its retailing at £941, only due to currency fluctuations, nothing else.

The US isn't immune to this either but relative to the YEN or HKD for instance both have not moved that much but UK and US economies have and thus have our currencies.

We can all blame Canon but in reality its not them to blame at all, if the USD$ and UKP$ and € Euro for that matter get stronger then expect the lens prices to drop, at the moment however with economies slow to recover that is looking a way off.

Im sure currencies greatly effect product pricing but using your logic the CND dollar has risen substantially to the american and Euro but yet the price differences between the USA and Canada have gone in the opposite direction on these latest releases... BTW prices in NEW YORK are generally the cheapest prices around....if one were to check camera prices in japan you would see its cheaper to buy it in US than where its made.

geez I know I'm an armchair designer but what gives with releasing variable aperture lenses all the time? Is it so hard to do a constant f/4 or something instead? It's a nightmare to use Manual mode with these lenses

A constant f/4 lens would be far too practical, though a bit more expensive.

Hmm, you've had an easy life if using variable aperture lenses in M mode qualifies as a nightmare! I'd consider losing job, wife and house an actual nightmare. Having to move a dial a click once in a while is basically nuttin'

This is purely a consumer lens and although I suspect it will be a good consumer lens, it is very pricey for the intended market. Some backpackers will pick one up for good reason but it isn't a particularly good travel lens because of its slow, variable speed and high price. Looks like a 2 lens set-up using the 10-22 is still the better way to go for many people.

It's just a figure of speech. When someone says "I'm famished" for example, they don't literally mean they are as hungry and starved as kids in third world nations. Or when someone says "I'm dead" when they have messed up something, obviously this doesn't quite compare to actually being in the morgue - or worse.

The currency differences have to between say the CND and the YEN or USD and the YEN / HKD /RNB. USD and CND won't affect prices a jot unless it comes into the US first and then goes to Canada and gets converted twice, this is partly whats happening in the UK. It goes into the Euro then to the pound, meaning it costs that bit more than it could do.

Unfortunately that isn't quite true. We have a 28-90 2.8 vs. 24-135 3.5-5.6 dilemma. Do I give up some key wide angle coverage and still shell out 1K, or do I spend only slightly less for the extra coverage without any speed?

Neither choice is quite good enough.

I'll take speed over range any time. Actually, I did just that replacing 24-105 for 17-55. Also remember that keeping the speed and prolonging the range results in a lens which is both heavier and more expensive, prices not all are willing to take.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

At this price it's a steal (assuming IQ is good of course) but where have you seen it?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Why do people complain about the price of the APS-C equivalent to 24-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS when it is less expensive than the actual lens 24-105 f/4 IS

Maybe because it's twice the price of the 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS?

Heck, if it were actually the equivalent FOV to the 24-105L, with 17-55 build and image quality, I'd smile while I paid the $799 they're asking for this. But it's not, and I will neither smile nor buy!

Of course I should pre-order today because it will probably run $850 in 6 months if the current trend holds!

Everybody is hacking this lens down, including it's build

Kind of amusing since nobody has handled it yet. You know, the elements are very similar to the 17-55, including the UD. Again, the released test charts look very promising.

I'll take range over speed. Never have I used 2.8 with my 17-55 when I'm stopping down to get my DOF and perspective for a landscape. Not to mention when I'm hitting the sweet spot for that lens. But everybody has their needs concerning how they approach their work. Price is certainly on the high side, but I could see this one being a surprise.

Yes, everybody is different. I used my EF-S 17-55 at F2.8 most of the time shooting in churches and museums in Europe, and in casinos and bars in Vegas. It was just fast enough to allow me hand holdable shutter speeds at ISO 1250 and 1600. And F2.8 was amazingly sharp. Sure I stopdown to F8 or 11 in bright light but it's nice to have a sharp F2.8 when you need it. But the next generation of cameras are so good maybe I wouldn't mind the noise at ISO 3200 and a slower lens would be okay. For nice prints ISO 1600 was about the max for my 40D.

If you think I was hacking down this lens based on build, you're misreading me. I'm only hacking down this lens because it is a stop too slow to be really interesting. All I want is 24mm on the wide site, Constant F4 or faster, and build and image quality that meet the standards set by the 17-55. It could easily have 3 of the four criteria met for all I know.
