This lens is simply a replacement for the 17-85: same aperture, same speed, etc., but improved (greatly IMO) by the 24mm EFOV and better IQ. Nobody complained about the speed of the 17-85, or about the 28-135 on full frame, so I guess I don't understand the core expectations here.
The cost yields higher expectations. At least that's the way it was in the old days....

I had a play with one today at my local camera store, it has a nice build quality (much better then the 17-55 IS). I was all set about buying one, but I just took a look at a few sample pics I took, and this one made me go
I Have had no flare problem with this lens but I also have the hood for it. This image was shot just yesterday and the full sun was just out of the frame on the left and creating some haze effects but no flare. This was at 15mm, f/7.1, 1/250. ISO100
I see I goofed and had made a slight rotation adjustment on this one but I checked the RAW and it is clear of any flare.
It's really strange? I hope it was just a problem with their demo and not a problem with the lens (Just like the early 24-105 IS). I was going to order one, but now I'm having second thoughts.....

With the lighting in that store shot a hood would probably cure that flare. I would shoot a few more with a hood if they have one in stock. The lens is really a nice walk around.
I had posted this earlier I think but this IQ is very pleasing to my eye...
The flare looks pretty excessive on that copy though. It shouldn't be that bad, but I guess it could have been the result of people handling the lens (Might have been a dirty rear element) since it was the store's only demo for that lens.
I went back to take another look at the lens today, and it's definitely a lens problem. You could see the flare through the viewfinder when you pointed the lens towards any light source. We tried it on 3 different cameras, and we even compared it against other lenses which didn't show any flare problems. The salesperson even gave the lens a good clean, and it was just as bad.
Could those that have this lens try to see if you can replicate the problems (Shouldn't be hard since all you have to do is point it towards a light).
I'm hoping it's just a problem with the store's copy, but if it's happening on other copies, I think I'm going to give this lens a miss.
Here are some photos that may show how well this lens handles flare. Not great shots, but there is a strong light source in each and I don't see any flare like "EOS 20" did. These were all shot without a hood because I could find one for sale when I first got the lens.

Thanks for posting those pics Mike!
I've been looking around at more samples, and it seems like it was just a problem with their copy (Poor QC on Canon's part though!).
Still trying to decide between this lens or the Canon 17-55 IS (Not really impressed with the build quality of that lens though) or possibly the new Tamron 17-50 VC (But I would prefer a USM lens).

I decided to get the 15-85 IS, and it arrived today. I was also considering the 17-55 IS, but I didn't like the build quality, and since I mainly shoot landscapes and outdoors, I don't really need a f/2.8 lens.
My copy doesn't show the flaring that the one I tried at the camera store did, so they must have got a dud copy.
The lens has a nice build quality, and it is pretty sharp, but the vignetting when shooting wide open is a bit of a worry, but I was deliberately testing the lens for vignetting (Shooting wide open at the sky) and I don't think it will be to much of a problem for me since I usually shoot stopped down a bit anyway.
I haven't had the chance to get out to shoot with it yet since I've only just got it, but I will post some samples when I get the chance to really get out and use the lens properly.

Nice shot.
How do you find it vs the 17-55 f/2.8 on the 7d?
Thanks.
I think the IQ is very close from either lens. Range and aperture kind of controls which one to use at any one time. There is a very long thread on DPreview on the comparison of these lenses which you may want to read. Both are excellent lenses.
