If your critique shows that the Chevy Malibu (with no aliens in the boot) beats the McClaren F1, and the Minox beats the Hasselblad, then there's something very wrong with your test

A Chevy Malibu beats the McClaren F1 as a road car for daily usage. By miles.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Oh, and you have IS in the 17-55 which regretfully lacks in the 24-70.

Precisely. I am definitely going to pick up a 17-55 when the rebates kick in, although the 24-70 will always remain in my kit so long as I have a FF camera.

I have to admit, I am starting to think about if I really need that FF camera, though....

Yeah, but if you can afford a McClaren, then you can afford several 'road cars'.

Yes but if you have a McLaren, you won't have "daily usage" because you'll be in the backseat of a Rolls Royce Phantom being driven around by a chauffeur.

And your chauffeur's road car is a Maybach 57...

When you can afford McClaren F1, you won't be here debating 7D or 1Ds3 or may be 5D2 becuase you can have all of them.

If you own a McLaren you'd be in a good position to buy Canon Inc.

On a side note, I often see FM members saying that if the 5DMII does not meet some photographers needs/wishes in terms of bodie features, they should go get a 1DsMIII and stop complaining.
They need to realise that in most countries people are not fortunate enough to make money as the average american, so paying $8K for a camera will definitely never be an option...

Err, I don't think the average american could easily spend $8k on a camera either, even if it was their business. I can barely justify the 5dmkII (hence I'd get a 7D... used, when I need it, heh).

Can we get back to the topic: "Is IQ of 7D almost as good as 5D's?", please?

I don't know if this video has been posted before:

The subject matter is enough to sell the camera to some, but there is also some good technical insight in the comment section.

Enjoy.

I can't believe I trust the company that booked that to provide the gear with which I do my job.

Wow... that's 3 minutes of my life I'm not getting back. I'm not sure how anyone thinks that video will actually sell the camera?!

It's "all about the video" capabilities of the camera, or mostly, with this kind of a pomp and circumstance release. I believe it's going to be marketed as a cine-DSLR and Indie film big hitter, regardless of the pixel-peeping that we do here for still photography.

For me, I'm a still photographer first and foremost. However, with this new imaging device (as I refer to it) I'll also have a chance to learn a lot more about video with the Canon L-series glass already in my stable. Regardless of the vagaries expressed at the pixel level, I'm pretty much sold on the platform at this price point (unless the AF underperforms drastically). Notwithstanding that, I believe I'll be able to capture 98+% of the subject matter of interest to me.

It won't and it wasn't intended to do so. Canon didn't produce this video (Bernard Maltais did). It was just a release event, and other people imaged it.

I don't know how Nikon and Canon do "release events" in the West, but in Asia this is apparently how they do it, so it may just be a "cultural thing."

I realize that this was a Japanese release event but I didn't find the quality of the video (regardless of content) persuasive at all.

I couldn't agree more. Canon didn't produce the video. There have been plenty of videos already shared in this thread which are of pretty good quality for a pre-release piece of equipment. This was more about culture, I think.

Ok, I guess I misunderstood your earlier post then - I thought you were posting it as another example of the camera's capabilities...

No worries. It was apparently shot much earlier this month. Plenty of better produced videos have been made since then with the 7D. And once again, Canon did not make it. Here is a much better one:

Finally got through the 45 pages. My real concern is that people are comparing the 7D with a 5D, hopefully for the quality of the image rather than competition. I think it is obvious that Canon has now completed their line up.

You have the intro level SLR which is the Rebel line up and the more advanced line being the xxD series.

At the top end you have the 1D and 1Ds series. There are a lot of Photographers who do not have the money to invest the big dollars in equipment but need a better body that the intro models.

For this we have the 5D and 7D where now the 7D is the mini 1D.

Next year will be interesting on what they will do with the 1D and 1Ds lineup to make more of a difference in the models.

I would really like to see whether they are going to be going up to 16 bit to compete with Medium format or stick to 14 bit.

Interesting times to come. From what I have read, if I can get rid of my current 50D I would get the 7D. It does sound like a great tool.
