That's different. Going beynd 10MP on a 1/1.7" sensor sends you into diffraction territory already from f/2.8.

I own a 40D, a 50D and a G10. As you know the G10 has the same pixel count as the 50D, but on a sensor less than 1/7 the size of 40D or 50D sensor. Images made on the G10 in good light at ISO's of 200 or less printed to 13" x19" size cannot not be distinguished from similar images taken with either the 40D or 50D. I generally shoot the G10 with F stops at around f4.5 and up, and see no resulting diffraction.
Michael Reichman of the luminous-landscape.com has tested his G10 taking the same images as his Hasselblad with a 39 megapixel back and printed both to 13" x 19". Professional photographers and professional printers were not able to tell which prints were made with the Hasselblad and which were made the G10. I think for most concerns the effects of diffraction will not be decernable between the G10 and the G11 or for that matter the 7D, 50D and 40D etc. etc.

Landscape photographers typically shoot f/8 to f/11 on APS-C... and that's definitely far beyond the safe zone of an EOS 7D. In fact, I would seriously doubt the EOS 7D will resolve any more detail than a 450D at f/11. Same problem exists for architectural or macro photography.

I have bookmarked what you said here and will get back to you in a few months time.

We'll see if you need to eat some serious crow.

Shooting the G10 at f/4.5 is comparable to shooting the 50D/500D at f/16, and I can clearly see resulting diffraction there. But as Brainiac points out, it can to some extent be compensated for.

That G10-Hasselblad comparison is of limited value for two reasons:

a) 13x19 is about the ideal print size for 15MP. Higher MP count is hardly visible because of the printer droplet size.

b) The G10 is at the diffraction limit. If the images were taken with the same DOF (and they should be for a valid comparison), the 39MP back is limited by the same amount of diffraction. For a given DOF, the diffraction is independent of sensor size.

-/+5EV, plus for bracketing you can actually do -/+8EV!

I'm ready to place a pre-order for a 7D. Given the experiences with the 5DII where some people waited eons while others managed to get early cameras, any suggestions on a place where I will have a decent chance of getting a camera early once they show up in the US?

I'm in the same boat. I'm confident this will be a great camera for me and want to pre-order. With recent offerings from Canon, it seems they have been distributing pretty well across the board from small to big shops. So I think it's tough to predict where to buy for getting one quickly. I'm sure BH and the other big ones have long waiting lists already.

Take a look at Berger-Bros.com. Call them and ask for Lisa Monahan and she will fill you in on their pre-order situation. I have purchased two DSLR's from them as an early adopter and they always seem to get good allocations. Customer service is superb and you talk with the staff who is handling your order.

Mention NevadaJack referred you and you will be treated like royalty.... No bennies coming my way... I am just a really satisfied customer.

I'd do it at B&H or Adorama.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Circuit City was supposed to get Cameras on the 9th so I called today and they said they did not arrive from Canon but are expecting them this week. We'll see.

I called Tiger Direct. It's not even in their system yet and the guy had no clue.

I called Best Buy if I ordered today, the girl said I could expect delivery on October 13th. At first she mentioned there was a big waiting list and that she recognizes the SKU number because so many people have called on the camera. Then when I inquired about how big the waiting list is, she backed off and said her computer didn't tell her that information, but that 'if I order now with her, I'd get it Oct 13th.

Was hoping to be able to use some coupon codes with the big stores to save some dollars.

You won't get any coupons from Berger-Bros but you will get personal and great customer service. Also you will get a straight answer on where you are in relation to the allocation (if available) and list position. Pricing at this stage will be $1699 but will work with you on other items. I just called Loomis Camera in Elyria, OH and started a waiting list. They are hoping to get them in the next 7-10 days, but who knows if that's based on good info or wishful thinking. Time will tell. Nice people there anyway.

Are we still limited to the three actuations when bracketing? I think Nikon is at 5 or 7. I have been doing some HDR stuff and can see the need for both the wider range but also more shots between the range to make a real good HDR. This is a move in the right direction.

I decided to get on a waiting list with a large local shop last week(San Jose Camera), thinking that they would have a long list and I would get to see some reviews before my name came up. I am now 6th on the list, which based on their size would expect to be called in the first shipment. Hopefully, we will see some more info on the AF, because that's what I'm questioning most at this point. Everything else looks good.

Yes... just three shots. You can shoot one sequence at +1,0,-1 and then reload to shoot another at +2,0,-2 and discard the extra 0 during PP. Set them in C-1 and C-2.

i don't understand why canon can't just give us the option of "I want 5, 7 shots". Saving it for the 1D series seems rather silly for what should be a simple firmware plug.
