More like a copy of the D400, 12 months ahead
Given the D300s is such a perfect camera, beside cramping slightly more MPs, how can Nikon really improve it? Likely the reason we only got a minor update with video really.

But Brianiac is right Canon has us itching for a scratch we never will get. Canon, it must certainly be obvious now, continues to "feature segment" their bodies so that we cannot get the utility and performance of Nikon (D700/D3) even though Canon has the edge in sensor technology with their own custom manufacturing.
The reason the itch will never be scratched is because the consumer will never be happy. This is the first time i've come on here since finding out some info and purchasing my 5DMK2, and I can tell you i'm glad I stepped back for 10 odd months. Canon has released the camera (or close enough too) that everyone was harping on about when the 5DMK2 was released, and still no-one is happy. Still people think this improvement here or there will make or break their photography.
All i've done with my 5D2 is use it. And I can safely say not one of the minor crisis posted on here has effected my work. Or at least not to the point of anything else being a better alternative. Sometimes we should all just take a step back from the Internet!

I've been thinking about that as well. What other features are desirable?
Improve on auto white balance?
New sensor?
16 bit RAW?
Or 'copy' Canon's HD movie and 24/25/30 fps options?
In-built GPS?
Fully auto distortion, vignetting and CA correction for every shot?

"They" say a lot of things - and are usually wrong!
The 7D can't really be considered a D300 "copy" or a "response" or anything else to do with the D300, as it's almost certain (assuming a three year design/development lifecycle) that the 7D will have been spec'd out, designed and signed off for production before Canon had any inkling of the D300.

They certainly don't decide on a cameras specs three years in advance. They finalize a camera less then a year before it's released. No electronics firm could stay in business with the production cycle suggested.
The D300 greatly influenced what Canon released in the 7D. They would never put the quality AF in the 7D unless forced to by Nikon. They wouldn't do 8fps either.

I wonder about that. The iPhone has been a huge hit and now every competitor has a near clone with similar touchscreen, interface and apps. One even claimed to sync with iTunes (until Apple fixed that). Nobody seems to care much about originality albeit the competitors seem to still fall a bit short.
Yes and don't forget this quote from the early SteveJobs mk2 when he was asked about axing the Newton platform: "Apple makes computers. Computers have keyboards." The consumer has a very short memory.

Absolutly agreed. This si why we are likely to see a FF camera with 7D-like features in the near future
Nikon is suffering from profit pain now. We don't know how much the D700 hurt D3 sales. If Nikon releases a D700x it might not be as cheap as everybody assumes.
I meant to communicate that Canon (unlike Nikon with their D3/D700 combo) will continue to "ration" features so that no one camera body (at any price) will have most/all of the features that I (we/Brianiac?) want.
That's to say it seems possible, now, to make a Canon 30Mp FF sensor with 7/8 fps that could also shoot 10/12 fps in a 1.3x crop mode (at 16/20 Mp). That would combine both the D4 and D4s for versatility and utility. Canon could make such a body in 7D size (internal battery at reduced fps) while offering an "industrial strength" vertical grip/battery booster/wireless link (as a package and/or accessory).
That would cover sports, BIF, fashion/magazine and general use pretty well. The extra cost of FF fab could surely be covered by the increased sales volume. Presently, to cover all these bases I maintain an 4 body inventory (D3, 5D MkII, 1DsMkII and 50D).

Agreed. It probably takes between 1 and 2 years (a'la the 50d being incremental over the 40d, and only a 1 year span)
The 7D looks tempting as an improvement over the 50D's AF abilities.
I have been moderately disappointed in the 50D's AF performance on moving targets--such as my dogs when they are running. I have tried AF center point AIS and it seems to me that the camera has a hard time keeping up with them. Oddly shooting at a Cal football scrimmage yielded much better results (maybe because the way football players move is more predictable than the way dogs move).
Be that as it may, I have a hard time figuring out whether the AF disappointment I have relates to the number of AF points or the speed of the AIS system. The 7D seems to fix the first but not the second. I am not sure whether my problem with the running dogs is an AF point issue or AIS speed issue.
So then the question becomes whether the 7D really is worth the bother or whether one must simply wait for the next 1D generation.
