Yeah, and.....coincidentally?......Amazon jacked their price for the Nikon D700 up $150.....

No. High precision F2.8 AF to 5.6.

That's a shame as I would't mind one as backup to my 1DIII.
With good lighting the samples on Imaging resource look impressive but the ones on Rob Galbraiths site under real world conditions are quite poor IMO. Lots of luminance noise at faily low ISO even after NR. I think it'll pay to wait and see rather than rushing into a 7D.

Finally Canon let go of their arrogant dividing marketing strategy by releasing a body in between the xxD and 1D series.

We have screamed and shouted for better AF in Canon pro-sumer bodies, but none of that worked. Nope, I think we have to thank Nikon for that - by releasing their D300(s)... Without the success of the D300(s) and the huge failure of the 50D, Canon would have never released the 7D. Good old competition

So, now Nikon should hurry up releasing their D700x, and there will -finally- be some room for pro-like AF in a pro-sumer FF

I dunno about "arrogant" - maybe greedy? But I agree that this camera represents catch-up for Canon. Many features present that Canon apologists poo-poo'd as fluff are present here - like electronic level. I for one hope that the mumblngs about noise are unfounded - this seems like a capable camera for High School sports. Please please PUH-leaze that they have a winner in the focusing sensors. I dunno about the missing assist sensors - hopefully can do the job. And the wireless TTL - jeez - how long has Nikon had that? As far as GPS - wouldn't that be so "Canon" to require the grip to make it work?
Just adding my cents to the fray.... can't wait fvor more info on this beast.

I agree with the poster that Canon reacted more to Nikon rather than listened to consumers.

This theory is a mass delusion. I apologise for posting this again, but this myth simply will not die, so here is a comparison of the 21 Mpixel 1Ds3 and the 12 Mpixel 'king of ISO' D700 at iso 12800:
http://cyberphotographer.com/d700v1ds3/d700v1ds3_12800iso_b.jpg

The 18 Mpixels of the 7D are very welcome, especially since, once again, as always happens, overall image quality and improved high iso are promised ALONGSIDE a higher pixel count.

The mass delusion arises because camera-buyers and review sites make the gross error of comparing noise PER PIXEL. This myth is based on an optical illusion.

The 7D looks great, especially with 18 Mpixels. I would love a full-frame version.

Note that Canon has stated that interchangeable focus screens will not be available, so those who like to manually focus or use alt lenses are hosed.

They're no worse than the images from the same shoot taken with the 5D Mk II, Willis - viewed in that context the 7D's output is excellent, I'd say.

That's what I'm seeing.

As I say, the RG examples are no better from the 5D II than from the 7D, and on another thread I've posted some examples from a Gizmodo review which really look very, very good indeed - and not a hint of banding even at 6400 ISO with the Levels cranked right up past "radioactive".

Not necessarily.

EOS 7D viewfinder does not have interchangeable focussing screens. In their place is a Transmissive LCD Screen - another first for EOS. Through technological advances Canon has been able to implement the screen whilst maintaining viewfinder image quality. This new feature, which can be illuminated in lowlight, enables grid, spot metering and AF points to be superimposed upon demand.

If I understand it correctly, we're actually looking through the VF into a small LCD like in those superzoom? Some people may not like that. That said, I'm not sure what that "transmissive" part means.

The last bit is also very interesting. If the LCD can be illuminated in lowlight, that means you really don't need any focusing screen.

You mean, you can now cause even more subject eye-blink?

In my attempts to use "commander mode" with the built-in flash when I owned a pair of D300's, it seemed to cause subjects to blink more often. And I missed discreet focus assist.

It's good to have the option and I'm glad Canon included it, but for certain kinds of photography (candid events) this idea seemed to be better on paper than in actual use.

I do agree with your point though.

I do a lot of work in meadows shooting butterflies, bugs and flowers where such a feature is incredibly useful. Also, the Canon press release says it is equipped with an integrated Speedlite Transmitter which I take to mean something different than using the built-in flash as the commander. Might be wrong. However if I am not it seems that you could do off camera single flash or create a simple two light set-up on location very easily which would make life much gooder - even for event photogs.

Looks really nice and at $1700 I would probably have splashed out and bought one. Alas Canon are charging the equivalent of $2740 here in the UK and that puts it out of my price range.

Screw Canon and their ridiculous European pricing.

BTW, even Rob Galbraith, who is not an engineer or physicist, peddles the mass delusion back to the masses:
"This means that overall, 7D image quality is shaping up to be very good. If weighted against how minuscule its sensor's pixels are, image quality is astounding. Put in charge of the 7D's development, however, we'd have chosen something like a 12MP sensor with better high ISO performance and richer low ISO files."

When are reviewers going to start behaving responsibly and admit that their armchair theories about noise are in direct contradiction of the facts about sensors from all manufacturers over the last decade. There are NO, and I mean NO examples of sensor quality decreasing alongside rising density. The 7D will smack a D30 at high iso despite having 6 times as many pixels. It's just a myth. There are now no gaps, and smaller pixels do not hurt high iso performance FOR ANY GIVEN SIZE OF SENSOR.

Oh wow. A new release. So what. Trade my 5D2 for a 7D? Will it shoot in complete darkness? I am already bored with the topic. Am I alone? A voice crying in the wilderness. A modern day Robison Crusoe.

I can't even gather enough energy to open the 7D threads...

It is pixel spacing and % fill you should be concerned with in regards to noise.

BTW most customers don't care about noise, if you have a great picture of their kid scoring it just doesn't matter to them. Trust me I have sold some really noisy pictures in my day that would have me flamed here.

So back to the thread, is this thing water proof like a 1D series?

Thanks,
Gerry

Another attempt to help all those who think less MP means better IQ.
Sorry that I'm not a teacher at all, and for not writing idiomatic english.

Photons are discrete quantities of light, each photon with a specific wavelength or if you like, single colors from the rainbow spectrum. The ideal sensor would not use pixels at all. It would record the exact position of arrival and colour for each photon, within the exposure time.

View the perfect image on a large enough monitor, and you will only see discrete color dots distributed on a black surface. A clean, white surface won't even look white. It will look as a chaos of intense color dots with different colors.

Move away to the correct viewing distance, and the image on the monitor will appear to the eye just as the natural scene does. The chaos of color dots will blend into a perfectly clean, white surface.

The smaller the pixels are, the better is the approximation to the ideal sensor.

Might have something to do with the D700 already costing 2699 since last month at every other dealer.
More than likely, the large stock they had is going down. Most every other dealer is already charging much more for the D700 since nearly 2-3 weeks.

Now lets see what Nikon brings to the table, hoping for a D700x, screw the video. But cant say

That's how I feel. Camera looks fantastic minus the crop.
It's what lots and lots of people wanted though, something like the D300.

I suppose those of us that want a D700ish body from Canon will have to keep waiting.
