I can't wait to get my 17-55 2.8 on this body.
It is incredibly sharp on my 50D even @ 100%.
I have to be careful to not choose Bi-cubic sharper when I re-size in CS4 and go with Bi-cubic (Best for smooth gradients).

She is on the truck in town now. It will have to thaw first. It's 13* here right now.

I am so pleased with 7D that I just added another one for my upcomming trip to Lock and Dam #14 for Bald eagle shoots (thought about 1d4 but decided to wait for few months).
So far my plan:
1. 7D+Ef800ISL in a tripod with Wimberley Head - Version II for long shots
2. 7D +Ef500/4.5L or Ef400L for hand held action shots

After reading all the minutiae comments on the 7D, I am reminded of the line from Apocalypse Now...."The Horror, The Horror".

Hi...

I just got my 7D from B&H two days ago. I bought the SanDisk Extreme 8GB cards (2) to go with it. These are the "new" Extreme cards and have a speed of 400x. The "Pro" cards are quite expensive and have a speed of 600x.

The cost: $79 each from B&H.

Hope that helps!

You are welcome!

I *was* going to get the SanDisk Extreme III cards....in 8GB flavor....but they were discontinued (and made faster) as the new ones came out.

I saw a YouTube clip about the Lexar 600x speed cards....and it was quite impressive.

Best of luck and enjoy your new 7D!

Finally tried one today in a store. It, well, feels so Nikon-like. It just feels like a shooting machine (I have always gotten that feeling from Nikon bodies, the 1 also series feels that way to me).I tried and I liked. Now I have to figure out what to sell to pay for my future 7D....

I noticed this too. I think the default setting is "Quiet Mode 1." Not sure how loud it gets when this is turned off. See page 137 of your manual for more info.

I believe quiet modes only apply during live view shooting. It is certainly MUCH quieter than my XSi during live view.

Very fine shots, Ruhikant. That combo looks like it can match 1DIII +500 f/4 in quality at a fraction of the weight and price, especially for BIF photography.
I am still happy with 1DMkIIN + 500 f/4.5L for BIF, and don't want to be piling up too many camera bodies.
However, as soon as 7D price drops to about $1,000 I'll buy it just to satisfy my curiosity re its Servo AF operation. It's gotta be better than 40/50D. How does it compare to 1DMkIIN, that's my question.

Thanks Peter. I was fortunate to be able to shoot 7D and 1DMK2N side by side with Ef800 and I have to say that 7D outperformed 1DMk2N in the situation where I selected the center AF point only. As you know, the initial focus acquisition is very crucial for BIF shooting and 7D's center AF is a bit better in this regard specially when I set the lens's focus limiter to minimum focus to infinity(1DMK2N could not see the incoming bird ahead of time or communication with new generation lens may be not optimized).

That sounds quite promising. While 1DMkIIN is OK for fly-by shots (in fact many cameras do OK with those, even my 20D, as long as there is no rapid/big change in focusing distance), it really struggles with the incoming (head on) shots, both with the initial pickup and subsequent lock.

I went with some odd-brand 16gb from Fry's for $40. Quite happy with it at 400x. It is a bit too much for stills, gives 500+, but if you plan to do any video at all, it fills quite fast. And no issues with keeping up with 1080p. Of course so far I only did day trips and diligently copied stuff off of it nightly. 16gb would be a lot of pics to lose!

The Spot AF focus mode works quite nicely. With a borrowed 70-200/f4. Wire didn't get blurred much at f/4 though. Yes, I know I need to get the 70-200/f2.8, as soon as I hit the lottery.

Help from the 7d crowd please.

Just got my new 7d camera and am loving it. Not having any sharpness issues (all seems fine to me) but wondering if you could help with the problem I am having.

Took some jpg shots. Using a SanDisk Ultra III 4gb card. Put the card in the card reader and out of some shots I got the following two shots with problems

Problem at the top

Problem with green

I had formatted the cards above so I couldn't retrieve the information again directly from the camera but later I had a picture out of alignment about half way down the pic (moved to the computer in the same way). I put the card back in the camera and downloaded it from the camera and it came across with no error.

Could those that know about this sort of thing please advise if it is:

A problem with the CF card?
A problem with the Card Read?
A problem with the Canon 7D?

I going with the card reader seeing the same file came across without a problem from the camera. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Fingers crossed X X that it's not a problem with the camera.

Could be your harddisk as well I guess.

Do you perhaps remember if it looked like that on the camera LCD, after you took the shot?

Could be card or card reader. I'd go with reader.
