These sports shots are just wonderful guys. Really like what I'm seeing. Finally had a sunny day in early autumn to go out and enjoy my 7D. It did not disappoint
I got my 7D last week, and took it to Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta. I bought a 10-22 lens to go with it, and I'm absolutely thrilled, especially in low light. I could not be happier.
The Balloon Fiesta is a colorful photography event.
It looks like the 7D is quite capable
Tom,
The flickr images are so tiny it is difficult to tell anything about them. Even the full size option is small (300 -360 K). I saw that some were shot at ISO 1600. Hard to tell if images have ISO noise or JPG compression noise.
Did you shoot JPG? RAW? was noise reduction used?
What are you thoughts on the noise level you are seeing in the actual images?

I'd always used Telephoto before (I tend to take wildlife and aerospace related photos). This was my first time with a wide angle lens, and I really enjoyed it. I took the 10-22, a 28-85, 70-200 f4, and 100-400, since I didn't know what I'd use. I took 90% with the 10-22, 9% with the 22-85. I used the 70-200 for three exposures, and the 100-400 only once.
Words cannot adequately express my pleasure with the 10-22.
40D: Shutter Lag (SL) = 59 ms, Viewfinder Blackout (VB) = 100 ms
1D2: SL = 40-55 ms, VB = 87 ms
7D: SL = 59 ms, VB = 100 ms
1D3: SL = 40-55 ms, VB = 80 ms
that figures since while faster than the 5D2 it didn't seem quite as fast as I had remembered the 1 series although it had been a while since I used an xxD or 1 series so i wasn't quite sure. I wonder why they didn't give it 1 series specs there since APS_C should be easier to make have quick response and they did add $400-500 to the price over xxD.
anyway at least it is quicker than the 5 series and rebel series

You probably know this already, but the center point AF behaves diffrently in servo / one shot. In low light, my 7D locks quickly in one shot mode, while at the exact same location, will not lock at all in servo mode. I use AF priority / tracking priority.
Edit: skibum posted while I was writing there, so we share the experience of servo / one shot.
Great link...will have to read that later. Looking at wedding images I did with my 7d/1ds2 this weekend, I did not have as many keepers on the 7d as first thought, not bad and I think better than my 5d, but I need to try some of the new methods of focusing that comes on 7D.
In that situation I highly recommend using the "AI Focus" mode. The initial focus lock performs just as good as in "One shot" mode, very consistent in my experience. When possible, servo tracking will start automatically.

Not to mention how tiny the subject was relative to the frame...not really a great test at any level IMO...
I am no BIF expert but there were bunch of guys in half moon bay area shooting hawks and most were shooting from too far IMHO. Not sure if OP was one of them or not. I hope there were comparison shots posted from 1dsmk3 in similar situation with subject so small in the VF.
(Am not a bird expert either) but, I would really not use spot AF on BIF's, and from that far away....in those shots, the bird barely fills 10% of the frame, like someone said. Are we expecting too much from BIF shots ?
Can't wait to try mine and provide some results myself.

+1. 'AI Focus' doesn't exist on the 1-series cameras and I think a lot of photographers either don't know what this is or consider it a gimmick. This is the mode I shoot in whenever I'm not shooting something that I know will require AI Servo.

Thanks for sharing. But a couple of those shots are mysteriously out of focus. That's strange especially considering the deep DOF of the 10-22 lens.
I think your copy of 7D suffers from wide angle focusing issues like mine. My 7D focuses stably and accurately with telephoto lenses, but is a disaster with wide angle lenses (10-22, 17-55 f/2.8). Anyway, it's now at the service center (send in couple of lenses + camera). I hope it can be fixed. Even my poor XSi focuses much more accurately in single shot mode with only the center AF point activated.

Which were the out of focus ones? Some of the night ones had me moving the camera quite a bit (it was hectic there) and with long-ish exposures. Can you give me an example?
