p.1 #1 · Canon sensor trends

With the new 7D now announced I thought I'd update this graph and post it for comments.

The last time I posted it I had noticed that it seemed Canon put their APS cameras on a faster technology track from about the beginning of 2007. You can see that APS bodies announced since then are on a faster climb than before. The 7D fits on that line nicely.
I had the 1d4 on a straight line continued from the previous 1dx bodies, but with the 7D coming in at 8fps I've moved it up alongside the 7D with an announcement due next spring at PMA. With a bit of improvement to the dual Digic 4 I would guess they could keep the 1d4 at 10fps, the same as the 1ds3.

I noticed that the 5D and 5D2 follow a similar sensor trend as the APS, so although I've not projected a 5d3 yet, I added a line to show where and what we might expect.

In the past I had simply projected that the 1dsx bodies continue their progression (dotted yellow line). However I wonder now if the better technology rate that has been evident in the APS sensors might also be adopted in the next rev of this body. The 1ds3 came out at about the same time the APS technology seemed to be increasing, so I added a solid yellow line to show what might happen if the 1ds4 could improve at that rate over the 1ds3 as well. Rather than 27-28MP it looks like it would be at about 30MP. It's interesting that a 5d3 would follow at the same density 18 months later.

Enjoy!

Mike

Edit, the hollow red circles on the decreasing line are the pixel sizes, in ums....

Are you an actuary, or do you just love making charts?

Flikr has some great charts on usage trending.. I think that along with age group, price point, and demographic would definitely make some interesting charts.

hmmm .... If you add a line for the G series of P&S Canons, the trend will be interesting.

Mike,

That's great! I think that should appeal to alot of us who are 'visually stimulated'

You don't happen to have an ISO related chart of progression?

Skankpile... no just an engineer
saaketham....sorry I'm sticking to SLRs, I have debated whether to add Nikon ansd Sony now that they have FF offerings...future releases MAY see them, I just worry that the chart will get too busy.
Hammy....I'll leave ISO to DXO I think, they have a nice interface for looking at this.
