p.7 #1 · Why isn't the 7D better then the d300?

What is the point of all of this?

The original thread was posted in Sept. 2009 before it was discovered that many of the raw converters available for the 7D just didn't work well. They have been improved and along with people now looking at the 7D in the context of the difference in magnification from the other croppers it is a foregone conclusion that it is the best cropper on the market today.

I owned the D300 and there is no way its IQ is better than the 7D. In fact the 40D gave it a run for its money as far as IQ goes. Maybe when Nikon comes out with the D300 successor the 7D will take a backseat but it is not happening today.

"What is the point of all of this?"

it's the 'if you build it they will come' effect, also seen in (but not limited to) the great hoods vs filters debate, raw vs jpeg, 24-105 vs 24-70, canon 50/1.4 vs sigmalux, ditka vs god, etc.

It wasn't until you posted this that I realized it was an old thread. Someone must have resurrected it. If you notice my coment about the d300 and the d300s version you'll see how I was confused.Jim Victory wrote:

The thread detail is much better w/ the 7D shot already, let alone after an uprez of the D300...

Okay, just for fun I did a comparison shot of the 7D and D300 at ISO 3200 and cropped equal sections from an in focus area of cloth, and an OOF background. I wouldn't get too excited about comparing the amount of detail in the cloth between the two cameras since they are from different lenses(maybe some day I will try it with the same lens). But neither does very well at showing detail, ISO 3200 is a bridge too far for fine detail with these cameras. The auto WB is much better on the D300, it nailed the

I rarely ever use the D300 above 400ISO, I find the IQ drops off a bit too much for my tastes. Which is too bad, as the camera is wonderful otherwise.
