you know the feeling when you're waiting for a long awaited gift? just about to jump prior to getting the parcel? once you've unwrapped the whole package, however, it turns out to be a nightmare...or just an ordinary thing - nothing special ...
this is what canon's latest announcements remind me of... as long as you're a 1.6x fancier or looking for a backup - yea, great, canon -

4) 19 AF points only. No more. But AF points can be grouped into 5 regions for AF tracking.
there seemed to be some talk about the center 8-cross handing off to two helpers automatically? maybe 2 assists for the center? of course that is a lot less than even a 5D2's 6 assists. Will faster/better processing/better quality points way more than make up for that?
Is the setup reasonable for those groupings to work for sports or are they too far apart?
Anyway, intriguing, hopeful, but with hints of danger. I think it might, though, focus even better than a 1D2. We'll see.
Also, they claim basic in camera video editing! (it would be amazing if it also allowed for dissolve transitions).
Also it has a much stronger fuselage and better aerodynamics.
the "announcement" mentions new sensor technology, so if its true the sensor wont play by the same rules as the 50D, which means comparing the 7D to the 50D is comparing apples to applesauce

You're right- the ability to customize AF expansion is arguably just as important as the placement of the AF points and the accuracy in the 1-series bodies. I'd also like to have tracking sensitivity. The ability to customize the dynamic AF points and sensitivity would make it a hit with action shooters.
i'm a little fearful the groupings could be close enough to work for sports, but maybe they went to a totally new pattern.
there was some talk abotu 2 assists for the center point on the other translation, but it was all somewhat grabled and easy to misinterprate
It DOES mention that is WILL HAVE AI Servo SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENTS among other AF custom functions .

Although the smaller sensor will make it less popular for video compared to the 5D II, the ability to do 720/60p would be very nice, as would the ability to customize the frame rate between 24, 25, and 30.
maybe not much, it is similar size to hollywood 35mm actually! the 5D2 is more like 70mm!
No offence, but if these specs are true, whats the point in buying the 5D Mark II, besides the full-frame-sensor? I mean, with better AF, more AF points, more speed (key issues that 5D MKII owners are missing), all that is left is the sensor, a bit higher ISO and HD video, or am i all wrong?
Useful comparative tables - in case you haven't bothered looking after the multiple threads here - makes very clear that the 7D (assuming it arrives) is pitched directly at reclaiming the mid-level market from Nikon.
Anyone know where the announcement will be made? Hope like hell it's not in some part of the planet that will require us to sit through most of tomorrow without bonfide specs!

Interesting you say this.
I just said the same thing some minutes ago.
Glad I'm not the only one.
maybe all there is like IF base aperture from lens reads > 5.6 send change address of AF routine to a null routine. And a simple search and swap of 5.6 to 16 and it works.
I was planning to buy a 5DII soon. Now it is dead in the water as far as I am concerned. I don't like to buy new that late in the cycle unless I get a great price.
I stil want full frame and highest resolution - I used to have a 1DsII. But I think the 5DII needs a refresh in Jan/Feb, which I will wait for.
May pick up a 1DsII again afor a bit and wait. Probably less depreciation than buying a new 5DII. Unless a 1Ds4 is announced in Sept also, may have a look.
