p.6 #1 · September Annoucement for 1D Mark IV

People --

If Canon intros a successor to the 1D3 that actually becomes a benchmark for auto-focus performance in:
Accuracy
Speed
Consistency
The sensor size and pixel-count will be almost irrelevant. And this camera should pretty much erase the stigma attached to the 1D3.

I'm not 'blowing smoke'. I still have all my Canon gear from about 55 years and 'fixed' my EOS 1D3 with Nikon D300, D700 and D3.

So if Canon gets the engineering right on a 1DX, their final problem is QC in production, which had to be a major factor in the 1D3 debacle.

Oh, and Canon needs to remember how dumb it was for their marketing folks to maintain a year-long 'stonewall' that nothing was amiss with 1D3 advertised performance.

So, now that people have voiced their opinions on what the new model will most likely have, who is going to step up and slap down 4500 bones before any extensive users reports start rolling in? To begin the beta testing........

Anyone?

I'm already on pre-order, so I guess I'm the guinea-pig

Excellent, Adam, congratulations......you're the man.
Incidentally, I have pre-ordered the EF 500mm f/4L IS USM MkII just the other day, which will probably be significantly more money than 1DMk IV. My dealer tells me I am the first one to get it in Canada. I am so excited about it I've had to cut down on my diuretics.

However, being on the forward edge of photography art has its price, as we know it full well.

Alright! We have a taker!

I jumped right away at the 1D Mark III when I read those specifications, and then had to go through the sub-mirror recall work, two trips for Error 99 problems, focus issues and multiple firmware updates before it started working as advertised.

I'm going to wait for some formal reviews and user field reports before I give Canon that much money again.

But I'll be anxious to see the early reports!

Who else is jumping in with Adam right away? Anyone?

If the author of that article is so knowledgeable, perhaps he can explain why Nikon is making huge losses this year while Canon is making a profit even though it is significantly smaller than previous years. Despite the poor economic climate, Canon's report shows their camera division saved them. Nikon's camera division, on the other hand, is making losses together with other departments in the comapany.

PS: Looks like you are another troll from DPR.

One of these days, PK, I'd like to hear about the price of being a kept man.

thw2,that is not changing the fact that Canon is pis*ing on our heads.I still remember the fall of the last year when I first saw the announce for the 5D MK2 release and I couldn't believe the specs;the same AF sistem just like original 5D.I read couple of times and I couldn't believe. But guess what,it was true;you think that if they borrowed the 50D's AF sistem into 5D MK2 ,they were in danger to loose money?

OK, I see where you're coming from.

The issue is that Canon does not take competition from Nikon seriously. It's almost as if they welcome Nikon products with open arms.

The question is how Sony performs. The Sony A900 also uses a rather primitive AF sensor. And Canon only takes competition from Sony seriously. If we want to see better products from Canon, we must first pray that Sony is at the same level as Nikon. Only then we will see significant improvements in Canon products.

I for one am glad they didn't put the 1Dmark3 auto focus system into the 5Dmark2, That's one of the reasons I purchased the camera, I had already been through a year of 1Dmark3 focus issues and was ready to take a break from that mess. You can link and say all you want about the 5D2 focus being the same as the previous version but it don't change the fact that I have great luck with it and others do also. Ron

You see, that kinda consumer behaviour is one of the reasons Canon will be asking (and getting) $4,499.99 for their new 1D Mk IV, assuming it's a 1.3 crop camera. If it turns out to be FF, the SRP will obviously be $7,999.99 because, as some of us understand all too well, FF sensors are "extremely expensive" to make.

Yes, it usually is.

There may be a lot of people purchasing the new model as soon as it's available, just like the Mark III. I really don't know.

But my post along with James' may indicate the same concern from a lot of other potential buyers this time around. Especially people who have been following the 1D series developments for a few years now.

This is why Canon needs to distance themselves from the memory of the Mark III's introduction phase as best they can. Maybe we should actually say IF they can.

A number of users now seem to be happy with the Mark III's AutoFocus performance. So a very intriguing question is, will they boast the "same great" AF system? Or a new one that has been "refined and improved" upon to help distance themselves from the Mark III's reputation? The "improvements" may even create more hesitation in some buyers who were burned early before.

We'll know soon enough, if a September announcement does happen.

I have no doubt the camera will look great on paper and have some very tempting new features and specifications. But I'm really interested to see how they will describe the camera.

And I would love to know the sales statistics for the first two months, compared to the Mark III's first two months of availability.

Nope. Usually it is worse! Actually it is kind of interesting this go around because there really aren't any clear upgrade paths left. In the past you could name a half dozen upgrades that were due on a given body and expect to actually see something along those lines. This time none of the bodies are even clearly due for replacement so the only upgrades to predict are related to whatever a given poster identifies as the core defeciency of the current product. Hope has been pretty much been replaced by animosity.

In other words, current speculation amounts to a series of competing wish-lists. This for a camera we don't know for sure is even to be replaced - as you suggest, none of them are clearly due for replacement.

That's a lens I'd be interested in, depending on how many MP the Mk IV has. Does your dealer have an idea of it's release or has he just taken your name down "in case".
I love my 500, but it'd sure be nice for it to match the 300 2.8 and 200 2. They are Canon's best IMO.
