That is unbelievable! As a user of a 400/2.8 I cannot believe the threads on the bottom of the camera would not strip. That type of lateral force would HAVE to put an incredible amount of force on the lens mount. You can bet there was a huge gap at the top of the mount between the lens and camera.

I see posts all the time from folks worried about hanging the 70-200 off the camera. Then I see pros everywhere hanging a camera + 300/2.8 from their shoulder by the lens mount. Obviously the mount is stronger than we

I can't imagine doing that to be honest. I have the version 1 of the 400 also and I really could not imagine putting the threads onto my camera and not the foot of the lens! ouch

Guys...

as a part time sport shooter (the other 50% of my time... I do weddings and XVs)...

my dream camera/lens was this combo (Mark III / 400 2.8).

I got the Mark for my B-day (last March) and the 400 was a trade (my 300 2.8 + cash).... after 3 long yrs waiting for them.

.... I'm mad @ these guys (the one holding my combo and his dad, the one on the right).

I really wanted to cry, to run after their @$$e$ .... I didn't even enjoy the game ... I called them not less than 100 times.... they couldn't hear their phones .... Finally the dad picked up @ the end of the first half.

Dad is my friend, who claimed Junior is taking Photography classes there the story begins....

i'd be pissed......that is why I NEVER allow anyone using my gear. I'm very anal about the handling of my equipment.

Lending out your new MK III and 400 f2.8 that you waited 3 years to get? You certainly are a better friend than I would ever be. I've allowed people to peer through the viewfinder of my MK III/400 combo from time to time but my hands never let go of the lens foot!

Lio, just buy a new Mk III and a new 400.

People who have that little respect for their equipment probably don't have the expertise and experience to use it properly, and therefore don't belong on the sidelines.

Why don't you just use them and see if they are still work. If there's any damage, if any at all, it'd probably at the camera mount. The lens should still be function fine.

Wait...he used your whole setup...not just your lens?

I'd be more worried (in this case) about my body and not the lens

Could be worse.

He could have used the "coat hook" that was sticking out of the side of the lens :-)

what was the point of this post ?

so you loaned the guy your gear and didn't know him well enough to know how he would use it ?

and you stood there and took this pic

i think a funnier pic would be the pic of you taking his pic

so what does that make you ?

Did you read the thread? He said he called him 100 times trying to tell the schmuck to fix the problem.

The point to me at least is to reinforce my policy of never loaning equipment to anyone not known to me to be a better shooter than myself.

Can I just say... I hate posts like this. Who cares how other photogs shoot or what they do? To make fun of the guy and go as far as calling him an "idiot" is really over the top and makes us all look bad as an industry.

I think most on FM aren't in the "industry". FWIW.

Merv.

That hook is to hang the heavy backpack full of extra lenses and spare body, right?

or as a hand grasp that other photographers can use after they've knelt down or layed down to get a low-angle turf shot.

I'd suspect the person did not own the aforementioned Mark III and 400 F/2.8.
It's just sick to see such prime gear being mistreated.
