That is unbelievable! As a user of a 400/2.8 I cannot believe the threads on the bottom of the camera would not strip. That type of lateral force would HAVE to put an incredible amount of force on the lens mount. You can bet there was a huge gap at the top of the mount between the lens and camera.
I see posts all the time from folks worried about hanging the 70-200 off the camera. Then I see pros everywhere hanging a camera + 300/2.8 from their shoulder by the lens mount. Obviously the mount is stronger than we give it credit for but the weight of a 400/2.8 is in a completely different league.
Can I just say... I hate posts like this. Who cares how other photogs shoot or what they do? To make fun of the guy and go as far as calling him an "idiot" is really over the top and makes us all look bad as an industry.

I pretty much agree with you. But - you've got to admit that seeing a rig mounted like that really causes your eyebrows to raise. If nothing else it should put to bed anyone's concerns about lens mount loading with lesser lenses.

We have no professional responsibility whatsoever. Nobody uses FM as a professional reference, it's a site for entertainment and education.
I think calling him an idiot is almost fair. I say almost because maybe there is a circumstance we don't know about, maybe his mount is broken and he had to use the camera...who knows. But if he did that because he doesn't know any better, idiot might be a fair assessment. It's obviously not polite, I'll give you that. And the way he's using it isn't like using a different technique, it's using it in a damaging fashion. The mounts will not hold up over repeated use, and Canon would not warranty repair incurred from that type of use.
I don't think anyone really cares if he ruins his stuff, but it's pretty darn fun to laugh at!
Personally, I would have been thrown out of this game. I would have rushed the field to save my camera, lens mount and monopod. If I made it to the field, He and I would both have been rushed to the hospital to remove my size 14 foot from up his butt.
What damage? The lens mount on both the camera and lens would likely be warped, the threads on your monopod could be stripped and the ones on your camera body as well. You are lucky that the lens didn't hit the ground as well.
