Ronan, a lot of kneejerk venomous reactions at the high price. Time will tell if their target market (a majority of which won't browse forums) pick them up. For big studios the cost isn't too high, but this isn't a camera for the budding amateur or solo professional.
Absolutely, the feedback seems to be unanimously negative. Although there is a bit of humour evident over on the forum you linked to.

The only problematic point is the price, but he seems to have the means to go through a lot of equipment.
Not saying he his a well-heeled amateur or semi-pro shooter either.

The question isn't how much it will be worth in a year, but how much you will make off of that gear in that year If you can make an extra $50k with this kit over your 35mm kit, then that's an extra $20k per year. Might be worth it to some. If it's an extra $100k/year, totally worth it. An extra $15k? No go.
For me the answer $0, so I would never even consider it. The same goes for a 1DIII (of any type), D3x, etc...

I suspect Reichmann will like it, but I'd also put him tentatively in the 'well-heeled semi-pro' category as IIRC his primary income isn't from his shooting but rather a mix of his gallery, printing and workshops. He's very much an anomaly though and going through gear is very much a part of his business due to L-L.

mawz - I agree with you. I could also see this camera being popular in big money shoots. Of course it might not be - I have absolutely no conception of what goes on there.
Kind of like the film/digital discussions that go on in the video/cinematography forums. Doing a movie for $30k, a film workflow is a significant chunk of budget. When you are making a summer blockbuster that costs $150 million, the film workflow is a drop in the bucket.

Why does it have to be for only one purpose, either studio or location? There are a lot of profesionals shooting both studio and location, that require the big resolutions which now have to compromise with MF for studio or 35mm for location; the S2 seems to be in between the two: it has more flexibility as a system than a dedicated studio cam yet better quality than a 35mm FF DSLR. It is also reported to have far superior higher ISO and buffer compared to MF in a body the size of my D700.
At this price, it is intended as a profesional investment tool to make money; as such the price is directly proportional to the ROI. People like mr Reichmann can afford them but are not the targeted market here -there's just not enough of them out there.

The S2 is LESS flexible than a 645AFDIII or H3D, not more. It's a very restricted system and almost certainly won't have better high ISO performance than the latest MFDB's (which are getting much better). It's only real redeeming qualities are a small body size, limited sealing and the availability of leaf and focal plane shutters in one system (something which has been announced for the Mamiya system as well, PhaseOne has announced it will be introducing 3 leaf-shutter lenses (Although those seem to have been delayed), T/S lenses are available in 645AF mount, and the 645AFD's can use several other system's lenses via adapters.
Don't get me wrong, I think that a system like the S2 or Nikon's rumoured MX system is a fairly good idea. I just also think that Leica is in the process of shooting themselves in the foot with how they're handling the launch and pricing.

Well, as the R10 is supposedly going to use the same imaging chain and AF system as the S2, They might well be able to get it out the door in time to save their bacon. I wouldn't be surprised if the R10 uses essentially a cut down S2 sensor as well.

I just don't see how a financially strained company such a Leica could develop and successfully introduce an entirely new R10 system/lenses, a FF M9 and the S2. Why even come out with an R10 when they have a potentially great SLR in the S2? Lower the S2 body price and make the money on the lenses without the additional costs associated with developing and supporting another SLR and lens system. The S2 will be difficult for Canon, Nikon and Sony to compete with. An R10 will not. Looking at the M8 and the defunct R system, the S2 just seems like a hail mary on Leica's part. If it is, then they should do it right!
