I have decided to move to primes and put the 24-70 up for sale. Even though the 24-70 is better than the 35 prime at 35mm, I much prefer to carry a smaller lens.
I have already started the move - I sold my 24-70 and have purchased all (2) of the Zeiss ZE mount lenses that are available - 50 and 85 - 1.4's. There is a difference - albeit arguable - I see a color and contrast unobtainable with other Lenses. I don't mind the manual focus - in fact I like it - having spent probably 40 years using manual focus lenes. I mount that 50mm 1.4 Zeiss on my 5D mkII and I feel as though I can get the best possible photograph of just about anything. I don't even miss the zoom. I move in or out and get what I want most of the time. (Keep in mind I am not a sports action photographer). I am waiting for Zeiss to release the 25, 35 and 100 macro in the ZE mount - I will be all over them before you can say "How Much"!
I'll probably sell my 24-70 when more ZA primes come out, since I too prefer the smaller lens sizes and bigger apertures. In the meantime, you should look into finding a used Minolta 35mm f2. Good lens.
