p.5 #1 · Shots at HIGH Iso, lets see em!!

Had to post this, because it should never have worked - but it did. This was shot yesterday at a local zoo. The room this lioness is in is where they go to rest. Picture a dark bedroom - lights off, and shades drawn. There was a tiny bit of artificial light from above (fluorescent I think), and a tiny bit of daylight mixed in - but very little of either. As if that wasn't bad enough, there was murky, dirty glass to shoot through. I used my D700 with 70-300 VR wide open, ISO 3200 at 1/25s hand-held. Yep, that VR really works.

This is with a lowly D90 at ISO 1600, but I was pretty happy with how they turned out. Redd Volkaert, one of the world's best tele players, at the Continental Club in Austin:

Indeed, he does.

;- )

He plays free shows nearly every Saturday afternoon -- pretty good way to cool off with a beer or three. Even the bar peanuts are free!

Here's one fresh off of my new D700. Some tonal contrast applied and NR in post.

I'm simply astonished at what ISO 3200 looks like from this camera.

Amazing, isn't it? Nice shot, and cute dog BTW! I haven't even felt the need for NR in most of my ISO 3200 shots.

Yes indeed, that's some playing! A friend of mine plays the tele professionally, and he used to talk about Red often. He said Red may be the best ever on the tele. I don't know, but he's sure damn good!

Was out for a little walk right now.

D700 @ ISO 5000 (NR set to "OFF"), 50/1.2 AI @ f/1.2:

This kind of blueish evening light is really a noise-enhancer, but I don't mind it here. No color noise and nice grain.
