For those using extension tubes...do you guys all use the Kenko ones? I heard they are cheap, but which ones do you get? I absolutely love the flower shots you've posted on this page - just amazing!!! I would like to try my hand at such photographs and macro-esque photography, but I don't feel like buying a 180L or anything like that to 'try'.

Thanks in advance.

The Kenko are fine an so much cheaper. They have electrical contacts and are full reporting and maintian AF and accurate metering. I haven't checked the results yet but I was trying the 25mm tube on my Sifgma 50 f/1.4 wide open or near wide open on some flowers yesterdy. Looks ok on the lcd.

I would like to, but the closest camera shop that would even have something like that to try is about 250 miles away. The only testing around here is to know another photographer who has something you're interested in and try it out that way! The better build of the Canons is why I asked whether there's a generic length or one that a person would use the most. The Kenko kit is $180 whereas the Canon 25mm is $140 or the 12mm for $85 on B&H.

Thanks Pixel - is it the kit listed here?
Also, is there one length that works better than another? One that is a 'general purpose'? Just wondering if it's necessary to have all three.

It depends on what FL you're using and what sort of reduction in the mfd you are looking for. For example on my 100-400L I mainly use the 36mm tube, but on a 50mm lens I'd use the 12mm or 20mm. You can stack tubes, so you could just get say the 12mm and 20mm, but unless the indivdual tubes are 1/3 the price of the kit, it's worth getting the kit IMO.

Get the kit. Mechanically the Kenkos are fine and having length options is very helpful. Canon does use better air in theirs but it doesn't really show in the final image.

This is at a dinner-show in Beijing last week. The performer was doing a traditional Chinese face-changing act and I was lucky enough to be allowed to stand right next to the stage.
This guy was dancing and jumping around like crazy. Who says the 85L can't get some action shots??!!
These are unprocessed besides the second one being cropped a little. All from 85L v.2

On my wish list Some of the photos seem to have a very (too) narrow DOF Is that aproblem when open, at what level does it improve for portraits? No-one seems to put their Exif data these days.

nrferguson, I share your thoughts exactly. As most should agree, the 85L is a specialty lens and the beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder. The narrow DOF is great for some shots, but I fail to see why a cofee cup shot at f/1.2 is anything fancy or 'artsy'.
As in outlawyer's shot, which was taken at f/2.8, I would like to see the same shot done with the 85/1.8 and find people to notice the difference.
That said, I'm not saying the 85L is a bad lens or not worth the money (it is surely near the top of my wish list) but so many get hyped up over this lens thinking it will make all their shots winners.

Who uses this lens for non portrait work, apart from the few flower shots (which are superb btw). If you don't do portraits would you even consider this lens?
