p.3 #1 · Hand holding the Canon 1200mm 5.6

If you're interested in HH'ing big lenses, this came up a few weeks ago:

i wonder which exact Sachtler head that is?

I don't know what it is but it's not a Sachtler. Never seen a Sachtler with an adjustment knob in that spot. It's not a Miller either. Could be a large Manny.

Pretty amazing. I bet he could have used a lenscoat, seeing how hungry that leopard is looking

He's also seen here hand holding a 600mm F/4L IS.

Though, I suppose that's less impressive.

According the The-Digital-Picture dude (who tested the same lens), it's literally impossible to handhold this lens due to it's balance point:

"Don't even think about handholding this lens. Even if you were strong enough to hold the lens up, the balance point of the tripod foot is too far away to reach for support purposes. Holding behind this balance point makes the rig far too front-heavy to balance. So, plan on needing a solid tripod."

Obviously the dude taking the tiger shot was laying down.

Hence the description in the photo of "focusing thru the grass"

Precisely. Thus "handheld" is a bit of a misnomer here.

Semantics. Obviously, he did not hold the lens with his feet, unless he's got simian talents which one seldom sees in human adults.
Some enthusiastic folks on this forum call their shots "handheld" although they might have rested the lens on the window or roof of their vehicle, propped it on a fence rail and such. Truly, the lens might have not been pod mounted, if that's what they imply.

Last time I checked that means handheld.

And where are the complaints about Canon not making it black (to make it more
discreet of course)?
