I'm thinking to get a 1D NC-E2 replacement OEM charger due to the bulky size of the original Canon charger. I found one at www.mydigitaldiscount.com. Are any 1D users here using the OEM charger? Where did you get your charger and how good is it? Thanks!

I use the OEM charger with my 1D and here are the two BIG advantages to the OEM charger to me (vs. the smaller on on the website you link to)

1. It accepts two batteries for charging.

2. It can REFRESH your batteries - the third party charges don't do this and its a big deal from my experience. (Refresh is completely draining the battery first and then charging it fully....this can sometimes take a poorly performing battery and give it new life.)

I would scour Ebay for a good deal on an OEM charger for primary use and then use the smaller one for traveling and so forth.

I'm also curious to know how good the third party charger from mydigitaldiscount is. From the looks of it, it'll be a lot smaller and easier to transport for trips:

BTW--the refresh on the OEM only works on one battery at a time eventhough it can/will charge two at the same time.

The Canon supplied charger will only charge one battery at a time even though you can plug in two at the same time.

Back in 2006 Eastgear was, I think, the first one to bring out a 3rd party charger for the NP-E3 battery, as mentioned here by Rob Galbraith: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-7899-8604 (near the bottom of the page)

I'm sure I've read somewhere in his commentary over the years that he uses it, but hasn't given any feedback about it... maybe try contacting him directly?

Here's the link from Eastgear, but it appears they only stock the EU plug version now.
http://www.eastgear.com/store/canon-npe3-nimh-portable-battery-charger-us-plug-p-197.html

Interestingly the model number for the charger at MDD is the same CD-BCNPE3 but looks different than the one from Eastgear.

A google search of CD-BCNPE3 came back with a few forum entries with user experience.

I was aware that the OEM charger charges/refreshes one battery at a time - but there is still a lot to be said for the ability to connect two batteries to the unit at once and have the "work" done on both in succession without intervention. That is a big negative to the third party chargers I have seen so far, they only connect to one battery.

And when you are shooting with a power hungry 1D Mk I - you need to have all the charged batteries you can get!

I use the Eastgear one when traveling. It does what it's supposed to do.

It broke about a year ago. Their customer service was quite good. I sent it back to them, and they FedExed me a new one.

That Eastgear model is SMALL - love that form factor. I'm going to e-mail them about the US plug version and see if it is available.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess my question wasn't clear enough since I did not know that there is a difference between OEM charger and third-party charger. From what I read above, it seems they are different. So more specifically, where did you guys get the OEM charger? I know where to get the third party charger from the web sites mentioned above. Plus, Adorama has its own brand charger as well. Do you notice any problem (e.g., short battery lifetime) when using OEM or third-party chargers? Thanks again!

As I mentioned in my post - over the long haul with NP-E3 batteries you are going to want/need the refresh feature so you need the OEM charger at a minimum. You can then grab one of the smaller travel chargers as a secondary option. I got my OEM charger when I purchased my camera - where you should have gotten yours. I don't like sales of 1D bodies without the chargers. You can sell any old 20D without an OEM charger, but that is not the same as a 1-Series camera.

You can buy the Canon charger from B&H here for an ungodly amount of money:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=nc-E2&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2FRootPage.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=submit

Otherwise - you can scour the buy and sell boards here on this site as they pop up every now and then along with other photo forums. Or head out to Ebay where I see them every now and then as well.

Your use of OEM confused me. OEM would imply to me the exact same charger that Canon supplies, but sold through another vendor, or without any boxes, manuals, etc. And that you likely will never find (for a new one), otherwise there would already be known vendors. My impression is you're looking for a smaller alternative to the Canon charger, therefore the only options I'm aware of are suppliers like Eastgear, MDD, etc.

So then, what exactly do you mean by OEM?

OEM Charger = Canon Dual Charger that came in the box from Canon. Anything that does not say Canon on it is not "OEM".

OEM usually means it's the item without any documentation or packaging.
Canon charger would imply the same item, but with boxes, etc.

FWIW, I got mine with the cameras. Never tried another as the space it takes up is minimal - i just throw it into my clothes bag.

How did you get a camera and no charger?

OEM = original equipment, is as supplied in the original purchase. it can also ply not retail ie unpagaged but still from the orig manufacture. What you are looking at is 3rd party

I've used only the small charger for about 6 months...haven't missed the "refresh" cycle of the ridiculously over-priced Canon charger. The small chargers would be about $20 if the Canon chargers weren't so flippin' expensive.

Got it. Sorry for the confusion. My bad... I am looking for a smaller third-party charger.

Sorry--my mistake. Connect two at the same time for charging, but the OEM charges one at a time.

Stay with the OEM charger.

I have gone through several from Shanghai. They are pure rubbish.
