p.1 #1 · Invitation for Submissions

Hello All,

It has been a while since I posted in this forum. Always nice to see the wonderful macro imagery. Just a few days ago I told two local photographers they should join this forum. I hope you all welcome them as they have some nice shots and are nice guys. Both are from Alabama, like me.
___________________

I have an invitation to the members AND lurkers in this forum.

I am looking for photos showing the Uni-Loc tripod style in USE in some outdoor setting.

IF you have a photo of your Uni-Loc "knee deep in muck or water" or "nestled in the rocks" or "reaching for that last birds nest" or "poking into the weeds" or "loaded with macro gear" or some such images (even snapshots) I would appreciate seeing them.

NOTE: I do NOT work for Uni-Loc, their distributor, or any advertising agencies, I am NOT sponsored by them, I am NOT paid by them, and I don't expect any compensation from them. This is my own project for my own articles on my favorite camera gear and for my future book. I make nothing if you buy a Uni-Loc (unless you want to buy mine..and that is a different issue).

Note: you don't have to have a person in the picture for it to be helpful. YOU don't have to be in the photo either. And the best may be published later in a major magazine or even in my future book but... with YOUR NAME as the photographer (more details later).

Why Do I Want To See These Photos?
Just so you know...I have already spoken with both the UK owner of Uni-Loc and the USA distributor about this project. And I am NOT getting compensated by them. I am doing this as an HONEST review of the product I find so cool that it is one of my favorite pieces of gear. I am going to write an article for a magazine and for a chapter in my future book. So...I am looking for illustrations that show them in odd places and odd positions and with different kinds of gear and such.

Here's a Challenge for YOU: Even if you do not currently have a photo of YOU and your Uni-Loc or one of it in the wild configurations....GO TAKE ONE. Load up your pod with some of your favorite gear and put it into some creative "pose" and take a picture of it. The more unusual the better. The more "challenging" the setting the better too.

Just be aware of your backgrounds and try to make the image suitable for publication (no logos or identifiable property...so no property release needed) and with good definition of the pod.

Here are a couple of photos of showing an usual configuration (for binoc viewing) and one showing the pod "knee deep." These came from the manufacturer. But I suspect the members and lurkers of this forum probably have some more WILD and interesting images of the pod in use too.

So show me something COOL.

http://steadmanuhlich.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p470680921-3.jpg

While I do own a Uni-Loc System 1700, I am looking for images of any of the Uni-Loc models in USE and with macro gear and IN SITU. So you could have a photo of a Uni-Loc 1600 or 1700.

You might ask why I don't just photograph my own. Fair question. The simple answer is that I typically use my Uni-Loc for INSIDE a STUDIO macro and other work! AND...I think it will be best to show how a variety of users in different places and with different gear use the pod. And, I don't actually use mine as most people do, outdoors. And, while I have owned and used different macro lenses and such, I don't have all the cool gear (macro lights, extreme lenses, etc.) that some folks here do have. In fact, my own macro gear was minimal.

And...because I never got to go to the swamps and mountains out West and into the deserts with mine I would like to include photos of this design of pod in use in places like that if possible. So I would like to get a variety of images. That is where YOU can help.

For those not familiar with the Uni-Loc, it is a very unusual design for a tripod that allows for all kinds of odd and useful configurations. In a way, it is like a Humvee in that it can go places and do things most people would not expect and it is a great tool for the unique design. (Yes, I know about Benbo...a very similar design with similar attributes). It can be shaped and used in the oddest of places and positions. One of my favorite configurations makes it look like a "Giraffe." Follow the link below and you will see that one. I once saw a photo of a Uni-Loc up against a rock wall (like a cliff) with the camera inches from a small flower or lichen or something. The pod looked like a spider crawling up the cliff! So there can be some cool images of the item in use.

And for those don't know what a Uni-Loc is...go to my link below and you will find a detailed description and many photos showing closeups and some very simple configurations of the System 1700 I have used. It may just be something you want to consider for your own future gear collection.

For those that LIKE them and USE them or OWN them, they can be quite fun and helpful.

Now you might find this odd, but even while I think the Uni-Loc is outstanding as a tool and piece of gear, I am currently selling mine as a "system." You might have seen my ad listing in the Buy Sell Forum. It is currently running. Just understand that until recently I had 6 tripods and pods and numerous heads. So I am in the process of changing my gear and writing about my favorite tools for articles and my future book. IF your photo of YOUR pod in use is really cool, it might be something shown in a future article or book on the subject of the pod. Of course I would not use your photo without your permission in any book or article and with attribution to you. But at this time, I am just looking to see what people may have as far as snaps or usage images. And this is for FUN too.

OK....here is a very clear request:

To the Uni-Loc owners out there reading this...here is a little challenge and invitation to YOU.

IF any of you have a photo of YOUR Uni-Loc being used on location in some weird configuration or place or scene (e.g. muddy water, swamp, mountains, rocks, odd places, general use for macro) please feel free to POST a photo of YOUR tripod in use in the linked thread below where I have shown some photos of my own pod and how it looks when configured and shaped a few ways. I think others might find it interesting to see how these pods can be shaped or used in the field. I know I have seen some really odd configurations that made me think, "WOW, that pod can do some strange things."

Just identify the image as YOUR pod.

Here is the link to the Uni-Loc thread I have going in the Buy Sell forum:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/769839

And IF you have something positive to say about your Uni-Loc, please feel free to add your positive notes too. That will be helpful as well. IF you have some cool statements to make or cool photos that could later possibly be worthy of reproduction in a magazine article or book, I will then contact you for permissions and such. Until then, just consider the photo you post as a fun participation showing what YOU can do with YOUR pod.

Thank you for your help on this project.

Sincerely
Steady

Roll, Tide, huh? Won't hold it against you or your friends, Steady. (Spoken as a LSU alum...geaux Tigers!!)

I lurk in the People forum and have enjoyed reading your posts. Your reputation over there is well-deserved from what I've seen. Two more macro shooters--even from Alabama --deepens the knowledge pool. They would be welcomed here.

Can't speak intelligently about the Uni-Loc, other than to say that it looks to be a very versatile piece of gear if you're so inclined.

Hi Kenny.

Thanks for the warm words of welcome.

We have LOTS of bugs and plants here in Alabama!!

But....probably not as MANY bugs as Lousiana!

I recently looked over Bill's flicker portfolio and he has many nice photos of flowers. I like flowers too.

Hello and welcome back I guess.

If you have a direct communication to the manufacturer and some influence, tell them if they can manage to attach that contraption to your shoulder or waist, I will buy that without hesitation. That would help take the weight off my hands as well as being more maneuverable than a tripod. I suspect BIF shooters with their heavy lenses would really appreciate that as well.

Hi.

I do. Thanks for adding your comment to this thread.

My Simple Suggestion (for a product already on the market that may work for you today) is....

Check out the SteadyCam (no relation to me "Steady" ) and look to see how one could be configured for a typical videoographer or DP for film work (motion pictures). Except...you would be using a still DSLR and your lens of choice. Check the load and try it. I would do this by calling a local videographer who already owns a rig...then negotiate to rent it for your shoot of BIF. Most of the gear like this gets used infrequently, so there is a chance IF you are in a major metro area there may be several units sitting around and guys willing to work with you. I mention "rent" because some SteadyCam rigs are very expensive. But...there are alternative products that do the same thing (essentially putting the load on a belt or shoulder harness) and allowing swing (pan) and movement while supporting the heavy camera/lens.

I hope that helps you.

I happened to see one in action at the Mardi Gras parade few months ago and I gotta tell you, it's cumbersome, and IMO, a bit of an overkill for a DSLR even with a heavy lens.

I was going to try Bushhawk but with the terrorist paranoia going around, specially in a country where guns are very strictly controlled, I'd rather not risk people overreacting.

I can try to come up with a DIY solution but I haven't touched CAD software in years and rapid prototyping will probably cost as much if not more than if I buy an actual product.

I understand what you mean.

I do know that the success of the Steadycam has spawned several models and other products to compete with the concept. Some may be light enough and small enough to be of use to you.

If it's true, they're not doing a very good job promoting their products. I googled "steadycam", "steadicam" and " camera stabilizer" for around 20 pages of images each and I see nothing of any interest. The closest I found were ripoffs of BushHawk, which is more about making it easier to handhold heavy rig but doesn't really take the weight off your hands/arms.

Anyway, sorry I hijacked your thread. Good luck with the photo submissions.

Hmmm.....

I will keep my eyes open for you. When I see something that might work (possibly) then I will drop you a PM in the future.

Hijack? No hijack. Just good conversation.

Check this out.

I used to have a Glidecam and this is just ONE of the things I remember for lighter weight support that uses the waist and shoulders to support cams.

NOTE: I am not suggesting you buy one of these. I have never used one. I am only posting this link to give you an idea of how some people support cameras (in this case video cameras but the same tool or harness/rig might be adaptable for still work too).

First one I found today.

Thanks for the link. Looking at that harness I think if there's ever gonna be one for a DSLR, it would have to be a shoulder and chest support to keep the DSLR high and close to eye level.
