At first the whole process seemed too daunting with currency conversion, shipping costs and Paypal fees difficult to account for. Fortunately, my exchanges with John gave me enough confidence in both telephone conversations and emails that we were able to find a way to make the transaction work much more easily. I did something I've never done before and likely won't again... I gave him my bank account number so he could do a direct transfer. John is no scam artist and the money arrived as promised. He even sent more than his bank estimated the currency conversion required to cover any fees my bank might charge. In the end I received almost exactly what I'd hoped to get out of the transaction. Filling out forms on my end proved to be relatively straightforward.
John will likely post something about the nightmare he encountered with the Customs Office in Melbourne. We used USPS Priority Mail that promised three to five day delivery but the package sat in the Customs Office and it took him nearly a week to liberate it.
John is a straight up person who is wonderful to work with. This was not a small transaction but apart from some of the nervewracking elements as I worked up the courage to give a relative stranger my bank account number, it was a complete pleasure. And now I will have the added pleasure of watching John work his magic with this amazing camera. He sent me a link to his Flickr account last night so I could see his first shoot. Have fun John! Recommendation: Someet was very easy to deal with. This was an expensive item and he asked if he could send a personal check but advised he was in no hurry and I could wait as long as needed to get comfort that the check was good. As it turned out, Someet uses one of the national banks and I was able to present his check at his bank (no wait needed) and get the cash immediate. I had bought items from Someet before and this time I sold him something. Have no fear, he is an honorable gentlemen.
